Organic Agriculture Standards Heightened By the USDA
(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 17, 2002 ) Under the new National Organic Standards Act any food product labeled "organic" must be at least 95 percent organically produced. This act is the first time the U.S. government has told farmers and food producers what makes a product organic. Organic food is already a $6 billion a year industry -- and with 10-percent of the U.S. agriculture expected to be organic by 2010 -- some in the industry believe the standards may not be high enough.
Eden Foods, an organic food producer, has always used a strict certification process to ensure that their products are 100-percent pure food. Edensoy, America's first organic soymilk, is grown straight from the earth with organic soil nurtured by farmers and is the only soymilk to incorporate unrefined GEO free (genetically engineered organism) sweeteners like organic malted grain and organic maple syrup.
American Soy Products, the largest certified organic soymilk plant in the world, makes Edensoy using the whole bean. The soybean is first de-hulled and then softened by steam cooking. The softened beans are ground, the soymilk extracted, and then blended. The facility uses a patented steam process that makes Edensoy more digestible than other leading brands. The process requires meticulous preparation and continuous quality checks. The USDA organic regulation does not address organic food processing standards -- but Edensoy enforces 240 quality checks to ensure the safest soymilk possible.
