Ford Unveils Three New Concepts in SUVs at NAIAS
(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 10, 2001 ) With unique versatility, no compromises, "No Boundaries," and the ability to fulfill a fly anglers' dream, Ford Motor Company reveals three new concept SUVs to accommodate any active lifestyle.
2002 Ford Explorer
The next generation of the best selling sports utility vehicle in the world has been redesigned from the ground up with major improvements in package, suspension, powertrains and safety. Ford unveils the new 2002 Explorer at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The 2002 Explorer offers an improved ride and a more comfortable, user-friendly package including a new independent rear suspension system and "porthole-in-frame" design allowing for a lower step-in height and a third-row seat. Control Trac(TM), a four-wheel-drive system provides exceptional performance on and off the pavement.
The interior is made up of flexible, accommodating spaces, emphasizing a multi-purpose, user-friendly package. The passenger compartment is two inches wider compared with previous models and has enough room to accommodate up to seven adults. The second- and third-row seats fold down to create a flat-surfaced cargo area. Additional storage is located beneath the rear cargo floor.
The 2002 Explorer offers a comprehensive safety and security package including Ford's new industry-leading Safety Canopy, with included side- curtain air bags (available at launch). Rollover protection and AdvanceTrac(TM), an interactive vehicle dynamics system will be available later in 2001.
Ford Explorer Sportsman
Outfitted with Scott Flyfishing Rods, the Ford Explorer Sportsman is durable enough for two-track expeditions to rivers, lakes, streams and the woodlands in between. To keep drivers from loosing their way, the instrument panel features a GPS screen that is operable by an on-board "mouse."
The avid fisherman can keep a catch fresh with a 30-gallon live fish tank, complete with a clean-air filter that locks into position in the middle of the back compartment. The tank has rollers for easy loading and unloading.
Running boards deploy when doors are opened for easy entry and exit, they also serve as additional storage of fishing equipment. The seat backs also have detachable carry packs that deploy out to function as "workbenches" for fly tying on site. The roof rack is fully detachable and extends forward and folds down so that additional equipment, and other items can be loaded from the side of the vehicle. Modular attachments are positioned on the rooftop to carry extra sporting equipment for whatever the outdoor excursion calls for.
Ford EX
Consumers who like the thrills of off-road experiences will be delighted with the new Ford EX. The two-seater SUV features high-quality detailed composite body sections on a Chrome-Moly steel ecto-skeletal designed frame that is tough, durable, resistant to corrosion and ready to take on any adventure.
Achieving a 50/50 weight distribution to provide optimal traction in rugged terrain the Ford EX interior features a full roll cage. To allow for easier entry and exit of the vehicle, the steering wheel and instruments are mounted on a steering mechanism that glides from side to side.
