One recent dryer fire in Salem, Oregon left two families homeless after a clogged dryer vent caused a fire in their apartment building. The Red Cross is assisting them with temporary shelter.

In Palm Spings, Ca, firefighters were called to the upstairs unit in a condo complex when a fire broke out in the laundry room. A neighbor used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire that started in the combined washer-dryer. No injuries were reported and damage was kept down to a minimum. The fire appeared to have started in the lint trap of the dryer.

Another dryer fires occurred in Lake Jackson, TX, where students at Lake Jackson Intermediate School were evacuated for over an hour after a fire started in a dryer located at the east end of the campus. The dryer contained hot mats, rags and aprons used by the cafeteria staff. The hot mats were discovered to contain a plastic-like liner which, when heated, could become flammable. This was the second time in two weeks that students were evacuated because of a smoking dryer problem.
