The Modesto Wizard Reminds Landlords and Building Managers to Clean Dryer Vents
Dryer vent cleaning could have prevented recent dryer fires that left families homeless and threatened school children
(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 19, 2010 ) Modesto, CA – Failure to clean dryer vents is the number one cause of dryer related fires. Improper dryer vent installation or inferior dryer vent systems are also major contributors to dryer fire hazards.
One recent dryer fire in Salem, Oregon left two families homeless after a clogged dryer vent caused a fire in their apartment building. The Red Cross is assisting them with temporary shelter.
In Palm Spings, Ca, firefighters were called to the upstairs unit in a condo complex when a fire broke out in the laundry room. A neighbor used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire that started in the combined washer-dryer. No injuries were reported and damage was kept down to a minimum. The fire appeared to have started in the lint trap of the dryer.
Another dryer fires occurred in Lake Jackson, TX, where students at Lake Jackson Intermediate School were evacuated for over an hour after a fire started in a dryer located at the east end of the campus. The dryer contained hot mats, rags and aprons used by the cafeteria staff. The hot mats were discovered to contain a plastic-like liner which, when heated, could become flammable. This was the second time in two weeks that students were evacuated because of a smoking dryer problem.
James Smith, certified dryer exhaust technician and owner of Dryer Vent Wizard, was upset to read about these fires. He was most disturbed by the fire that occurred at a school. “The article said it the second time in two weeks that students were evacuated because of a smoking dryer problem,” said Smith. “One time is too many, but why wasn’t the problem resolved before it occurred a second time? Our kids have the right to be safe when they go to school.”
This is why all Dryer Vent Wizard technicians spend time with their customers, developing relationships and educating them on the importance of proper dryer vent cleaning and installation to prevent dryer fires. “Residents in multi-unit apartment buildings are really at risk,” said Smith. “Public laundries, schools, gyms, beauty shops and other large buildings that have clothes dryers are also at risk. Safely evacuating a panicked crowd from a public building that is on fire often results in injury.”
James Smith is the Modesto, California Wizard and he takes great pride in his work. In order to provide the very best service possible, he has gone the extra mile to further his education by becoming CSIA Certified (contractor license #943017) in dryer exhaust services.
