(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 22, 2010 ) White Lake, MI – The Oakland County Road Commission has refused to maintain a faulty storm drain in a White Lake neighborhood because it is not causing a problem with the road.

Susan Downey began calling the Oakland County Road Commission back in the Fall of 2008, when the ditch in her front yard would fill up with water. “The first time I called, they came out and pumped the water out,” said Downey. “It filled up again, but they refused to come back.”

Susan turned to family, friends and neighbors for advice. “My father told me to call the County Commissioner,” said Downey. “He said he had a water problem in front of his house and his county commissioner resolved the problem within days.”

Susan called Jim Runestad, the County Commissioner in White Lake. “He listened to my concerns and kept in communication with me, but so far, the problem has not been resolved. Jim made several calls to the OCRC on my behalf. The only answers I’ve received were “lack of funds” or “lack of manpower,” to get the repairs done.”

The storm drain in this area requires ongoing maintenance. The Oakland County Road Commission has the equipment to manually move the water to another location; however, they refuse to spend the time and money on something that will always continue to be a problem. “They say they cannot fix it because we are in a low, wet area,” said Downey. “They will not maintain it either, because it’s too much work!”
