After developing award-winning franchised real estate offices in Dallas and Houston, Texas in the late 1970s and 1980s, the late Ken D’Angelo began to focus on recycling single-family homes. The decision led to the basis which became HomeVestors of America, Inc, the “We Buy Ugly Houses” people.

The “We Buy Ugly Houses” billboard was created in the early 1990s to motivate people who wanted to sell their house quickly and at a discount. Mr. D’Angelo would purchase the home as-is, and then resell the property to real estate investors or renovate the home to enhance the neighborhood and sell to first-time home buyers.

By the mid 1990s D’Angelo was buying and selling more than 100 properties per year. As the company grew D’Angelo decided to teach others how to buy, repair and sell homes. Ken D’Angelo became the founder of “We Buy Ugly Houses” franchise business system of HomeVestors of America, Inc., the first franchise company of its kind.
