(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 06, 2010 ) Madison, WI - Bully troubles can quickly escalate, and it seems like some children are targeted more than others.
But before these issues spiral into a serious situation for your child, there are ways to “bully proof” them from harm, using the techniques of Verbal Judo, said Chan Lee.

Verbal Judo, a communications methodology used by law enforcement and public safety for almost three decades, has been adapted to address bullying and conflict situations for children. Lee has worked with Verbal Judo founder Dr. George Thompson and Master Trainer Gary Klugiewicz of the Verbal Judo Institute to adapt these techniques for personal use.

Here are some of the Bully Management tips that are part of Verbal Judo:
• Consider your tone of voice and body language; you want to be assertive without being pushy or aggressive.
• Don’t overreact to a situation that comes your way; staying calm, cool and collected will help deflect the situation.
• Don’t push back! Neutralize the attack by blocking and moving – with words.
• Practice your delivery. Your responses have to be quick and natural.

Lee, who trains 1,500 students in Tae Kwon Do, has incorporated Verbal Judo into the curriculum of his martial arts schools. A growing number of martial arts schools across the country have adopted Lee’s Verbal Judo for Young Martial Artists program, which has recently been credentialed by the Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College

“When someone gets bullied or assaulted, they come to a martial arts school, looking for answers,” Lee said. “Verbal Judo answers the question: What can be done before the problem escalates to violence?

“You can’t stop bullying,” said Lee, “but you can manage the situation.”
