On January 21, 2010, Toyota issued a recall affecting 2.3 million vehicles due to a problem with the gas pedal mechanism sticking. A few days later, a separate recall was issued, adding 1.1 million vehicles to a recall originally issued in November 2009. This recall was announced after problems with the vehicles’ floor mats interfering with the gas pedal were linked to several serious accidents.
Both the problem with the gas pedal sticking and the issue with the gas pedal getting caught on the vehicle floor mat can result in unintentional and uncontrollable acceleration.
