In the report, the analyst notes:
“The Company borrows short term at less than 1%, and then buys long-term debt at least 4%, leveraging each dollar to increase the total return on equity. The carry trade that once was dominated by the borrowing at the Bank of Japan (BOJ) -- and to a lesser extent the Swiss currency and U.S. dollar -- has now switched predominately to the U.S. dollar in international markets.
“During 2008, the Company couldn't borrow due to the frozen credit markets, which have been characterized by an industry of deteriorating balance sheets of the banks and broker-dealers responsible for providing credit. During this time and through the second quarter of 2009, the Company engaged in four rounds of public and private financing, diluting the shares during the process. Total proceeds totaled $1.4 billion from these stock offerings starting in 2008 through June 30, 2009.”
