There is an abundance of information available which gives very confident advice on the best ways to be a parent, and yet still parents can feel uncertain about the appropriateness of the advice being given. How can a parent know what the best way to parent really is? What is the secret? "It is in using the magnetic attraction of your innate wisdom to guide you", answered Dr. Rick Schaefer.

"There are traditional views that are passed along to new parents regarding the raising of their children, and many of those views are about maintaining control over the kids and being strong with discipline and rules. Although some of these views are popular there is a growing number of parents who question the wisdom in them and wonder if there is a better way to do it" Dr. Schaefer continued.

Along with the questioning there is a lack of self-confidence in their own ideas of how to parent. Moms and Dads gather at the after-school pickup or sports events and chat about their uncertainties in the decisions they make or actions they take regarding their children. When a parent is struggling with any situation, such as when should homework be done; what are the consequences if house rules are not followed; can the nature of their relationship with their child include friendship; they can often be told to be strict or tough, for the sake of staying in the power position in the relationship. Control must be maintained at all times!

And yet, this advice can be unsettling, and have a bad feel to it. "There is one very good reason for this: it does not agree with the message that the heart is sending. When the mind and the heart are not in agreement, there is confusion and uncertainty and weak self-confidence, and the only way to relieve those uncomfortable feelings is to trust what the heart is saying. Although the message from the heart may not be in agreement with the message from the mind, by following the wisdom the heart holds the true power in the relationship, the power of love, will guide parents to decisions that hold the greatest wisdom possible. This is an unconventional perspective on parenting and it may cause the parent to be in a very small minority as far as their peers are concerned. That is totally okay though! Learning to be the best parent you can be is guaranteed to take you away from the crowds" he stated.

Dr. Schaefer recommended "to get started, try using it on an issue that seems small so that the impact of this perspective can be felt. Once it feels comfortable, move on to something bigger and then keep doing it. Over time a sense of confidence will build, along with the knowing that you are indeed parenting in the best way possible, by listening to the wisdom in your heart."
