LG Display Co. Ltd. (LPL) manufactures and supplies thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels in a wide range of sizes and specifications primarily for use in televisions, laptop computers, and desktop monitors. The Company also manufactures TFT-LCDs for handheld application products, such as mobile phone, and medium- and large- size panels for industrial and other applications, such as entertainment systems, portable navigation devices, e-paper, digital photo displays and medical diagnostic equipment.
In the report, the analyst notes:
“According to the market research firm DisplaySearch, the global LCD-TV panel market was 113 million units in 2008 and is forecast to reach 140 million units in 2009. The market is expected to grow at an annual rate of approximately 10%, reaching 219 million in 2013. While prices for LCD-TV panels fell as much as 45% in 2008, Kevin Choi, vice president of LPL’s TV marketing department, said that the Company saw prices start to rebound in March 2009.
“To tap into growing demand, LPL has recently announced two initiatives to expand production. First, on July 15, 2009, the Company reported that it would invest in expanding its eighth generation LCD production line (panels measuring 50-inches diagonally) in Panju, Korea. The Company hopes the expansion, known as the P8-Extension, will help the Company capitalize on the growing market for large LCD TVs. LPL reported that it had been experiencing a shortage of 20-30% in received orders and the P8-Extenion will help address swelling demand.”
