Mark covered the advance research one should do before hiring a moving company, “find out about the company; check references,” said Goedert. “Check with the Better Business Bureau for consumer complaints and verify the status of their licenses with the US DOT, State DOT or ICC. Find out about the company’s liability protection to see if they provide coverage for lost or damaged goods. You might need to purchase additional transit insurance from your insurance company.”

Mark also talked about communicating with the movers, “Make sure the movers know about the layout of your new home and how many staircases there are. Let them know if there are any low-hanging utility wires or tree branches that may impede the moving truck. Be sure communication is clear as to the location of the new home and when you need to complete your move.”

Mark advised the group about items that are difficult or impossible to replace, “You will want to pack certain valuables separately and move them in your own vehicle. Important documents like wills or deeds, jewelry, computers, art work, photos and home videos are not easily replaced.”

“Planning your move depends on how far you are going and how quickly you need to make your move,” said Goedert. “Some people can do it all with two friends and a truck; others will find that they need a moving van and a crew. Careful planning and preparation can make moving less overwhelming.”
