Buchanan Renewables Sponsors U.S.–Africa Business Summit

Company Positions Liberia as World’s First Sustainable Biomass Driven Economy

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 15, 2009 ) Washington, D.C.— The Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) today announced that Buchanan Renewables (BR) will sponsor the 7th Biennial U.S. – Africa Business Summit: Realizing the Investment Power of Africa, to be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., September 29 – October 1, 2009.

“We have entered a new age in the energy industry,” said Stephen Hayes, president and CEO of CCA. “With the innovation of Buchanan Renewables, Africa is taking part in this remarkable new era.”

Buchanan Renewables Power, a member of the Buchanan Renewables Group, is establishing a 36 MW wood fired, CO2 neutral power plant to supply electricity to Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia. Creating hundreds of jobs, the plant will be fueled by woodchips from non-productive rubber trees. In so doing, BR is also stimulating the rejuvenation of rubber plantations by taking out the old non-productive trees and replacing them with vibrant and productive young ones. The company aims to generate electricity from natural, non-edible, renewable and sustainable resources indigenous throughout West Africa. Buchanan focuses on projects that are environmentally and socially sound with special emphasis on the reduction of greenhouse gases.

“This project reiterates the importance of renewable bio-fuels in today’s global economy,” said Richard Tolbert, Chairman of Liberia’s National Investment Commission and Economic Advisor to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. “Through this Public-Private Partnership, our agricultural efforts are complimented and our rubber sector rejuvenated. This is the model for Africa and Liberia is setting the precedent for the rest of the continent to follow.” At the U.S.-Africa Business Summit, Tolbert, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), and BR will present their unique approach in the workshop Flipping the Switch on African Renewable Energy.
