(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 13, 2009 ) Goshen, MA – With more and more business people sending thoughts around the world on Twitter, the microblogging service’s 140-character limit spawns some pretty odd-looking and hard-to-understand messages. According to a new list of compression techniques posted on the web, however, it’s possible to use conventionally spelled words in pithy tweets and come off as an intelligent adult (www.yudkin.com/tweet.htm ).
"Many tweeters cram more content into their Twitter box by using texting symbols or making up abbreviations on the fly," says conciseness queen Marcia Yudkin, who has been writing and publishing a weekly 180-word email newsletter called The Marketing Minute for more than 10 years. "The trouble is, your on-the-fly shortenings can baffle your audience and make you come across like a teenager."
Yudkin’s micro- and nano-editing tips for Twitter, gleaned from a quarter century of work for top magazine and radio editors, include:
· Set the topic by stating it at the beginning, followed by a colon or question mark. This enables you to dispense with at least one verb and often a lot of other context-setting words as well.
· Eliminate "and" before the last item in a series.
· When you're disagreeing with someone or something, quote the other point of view, then state your opinion without quotation marks.
· Use short, declarative sentences and just one-word transitions to indicate the relationship between ideas.
· Plus seven more techniques.
