In the Detroit Metropolitan Area, Not all Waste Disposal Services are Equal
There is a national alert that’s just been released concerning the customer deception in the trash pick up industry.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 08, 2009 )
Trash pick up containers begin in size at two cubic yards and go way up to 40 cubic yards. When a dumpster delivery company quotes a price on his equipment to a prospective customer for a specific size, the price-to-size-quote should be for a true and accurate cubic footage. Yet, the public and private contractors never take a yard stick to determine the real height, width and length measurements of the garbage dumpsters or the container bins.
The standards and regulations of the Michigan Department of Agriculture Weights & Measures Program is responsible for ensuring that all weights and measures used in commerce are accurate. This ensures that consumers get what they pay for and, in this case, that all waste disposal companies are able to compete on a level playing field. This is not happening in Michigan.
Some of the misrepresented equipment orders were found to be short by as much as three cubic feet. What all this means to the consumer is more trash and junk pickup trips, which in turn mean a higher cost to customers.
Accurate weights and measures is good business for operators, and it is the responsibility of the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s Weights and Measures Program to ensure that an equitable and fair marketplace exists across the state. The MDA Weights and Measures Program utilizes a proactive educational and compliance assistance approach to assist businesses and their customers with their weights and measures questions, concerns and needs.
If you suspect that you are being deceived by your trash removal services company contact the Michigan Department of Agriculture in Lansing and report your case. The MDA Consumer Complaint Hotline: 1-800-632-3835.
