New Progressive Rock band Seratonin Telegram reviewed on InfamousGuitar.com
Seratonin Telegram, a new progressive rock act out of Chicago, has been discovered by InfamousGuitar.com’ Bridgette Oliver, and she likes what she heard.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 03, 2009 ) CHICAGO, IL - Since the 1960s, progressive rock bands have pushed the technical and compositional envelope by going beyond the standard rock or popular verse-chorus-verse-chorus song structures. Additionally, the pieces often embrace elements drawn from classical, jazz, and world music. Instrumentals were common, while songs with lyrics were sometimes conceptual, abstract, or based in fantasy.
On my daily trek through the vast wilderness of online bands, every once in a while I stumble upon a gem that surprises me. Today my progressive rock diamond in the rough is Seratonin Telegram. A three-piece hailing from the windy city, these guys are relatively unknown, but after listening to only a few of their tracks I find myself feeling oddly familiar with them.
From the first few moments of “Fear Itself,” the eerie ambiance and lingering intro makes me feel as though I’m listening to an altered version of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album. The similarity continues with “Checks and Balances,” and then swiftly moves on with “Thousand Times Part II” and “Enemy Within” down a path that follows the thread from fuzz-toned mid-70s garage-rock through the grungy blasts of The Doors, and finally through mid-90s heartland progressive rock.
