Rebecca Colmer reminds us to also Take Care of the Caregiver
Caregivers owe it to themselves to recognize and care for their own needs, in addition to those of the patient
(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 13, 2009 ) Ann Arbor, MI – Caring for aging family members or for someone who is chronically ill can be an extremely demanding job. During a recent interview, Rebecca Colmer, a professional caregiver said, “In a perfect world, the care-receiver would recognize this and try to minimize the negative effects of their caregiver; however, as we all know, this is not a perfect world.”
According to Rebecca, what is stressful for some may just be a minor irritation to others; it all depends on perception, interpretation and response to an event. “Long-term care giving is viewed as highly stressful to most people,” said Rebecca. “Stress can make you physically and emotionally sick so steps should be taken to keep in shape.”
Rebecca offered tips for caregivers including an early medical diagnosis to help set up a care plan. Caregivers need to be informed about the condition and know what to expect as the disease progresses. Caregivers need help locating and using resources, a good support system, assistance from family and friends, respite time, regular health screenings and help moving onward after their loved one dies.
“Being a caregiver will change your life,” said Rebecca. “There is often an adjustment phase where you will find it necessary to redefine your sense of purpose. You may find it difficult or impossible to return to your earlier life. Take time to reflect on the experience and never stop caring.”
