Caregivers Learn about Hospice Care
Hospice provides support and care for people in the last phases of incurable illness so that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible
(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 13, 2009 ) Ann Arbor, MI – Hospice recognizes dying as part of the normal process of living and focuses on maintaining the quality of remaining life. Rebecca Colmer was recently invited to speak at a meeting for caregivers and people who are caring for sick or aging loved ones. The topic was Hospice, a special approach to caring for terminally ill patients that stresses palliative care (relief of pain and uncomfortable symptoms) as opposed to curative care.
Rebecca was happy to discuss Hospice with the group as she recommends this service to people who are diagnosed with a terminal illness. “Most Hospice care focuses on keeping the patient at home,” said Rebecca. “This provides a much better environment than a hospital for the patient as well as the family. There is more freedom and fewer rules regarding visitation. In the hospital, doctors and nurses are in and out constantly, often asking visitors to step out while they perform procedures.”
Rebecca explained more about Hospice, “There are different programs providing hospice care; some of these include an inpatient hospice unit at a hospital or nursing home, a community-based hospice, a free-standing, inpatient hospice, continuing care retirement community programs and other models like HMOs. The best Hospice programs are home care organizations that provide specially trained nurses and volunteers who work with the patient, their family and close friends. Pain management is a specialty of Hospice; in addition, they also provide bereavement counseling. Some of the hallmarks of hospice include knowledge of concepts related to death and dying, stress management skills, sensitive communication skills, a sense of humor and flexibility.”
At the conclusion of the meeting, Rebecca said, “Today hospice has a major role in the healthcare movement. The terminally ill have options and the quality of their lives can still be within their control.
