Care Giving Professional Provides Resources for Caregiving Help

Adults are living longer, increasing the demand for caregiving; economic conditions and financial difficulties are some issues faced by care givers and recipients

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 29, 2009 ) Ann Arbor, MI – During a recent interview with Rebecca Colmer, a care giving professional, resources for caregiving help were discussed. When asked about how families cope with caring for aging adults in today’s economy, Rebecca said, “Being a caregiver is not easy; many people have to juggle family, household maintenance and one or two jobs. This doesn’t leave a lot of spare time to give an aging family member. Though in the beginning it might be possible for one person to handle caregiving on their own, needs change, often increasing the workload. This is when it becomes necessary to turn to family and friends for assistance.”

What happens if family and friends claim to be too busy? Rebecca suggested, “One of the first resources you should contact is your area agency on aging. Almost every state has one or more which serve local communities. The local senior center is a good place to network with other caregivers as are organizations like the United Way or the Lion’s Club. Churches and synagogues can also be helpful; even if you do not belong to a church many offer caregiving help to people of all faiths or they may be able to point you in the right direction.”

The information Rebecca Colmer provided was very useful in helping people deal with the overwhelming issues of family caregiving. Other resources include national organizations and government agencies. “There are organizations for almost every ailment or illness that can be found on the internet, in the yellow pages or at your local library. Government agencies like the health department or social services are other resources. Home health care agencies, though very expensive, offer both skilled and custodial care. Medicare may pay for some of their services.”

As the interview was concluded, Rebecca said, “The important thing is to be sure you are not taking on too much by yourself. Utilize other resources and put together a team of people to help. Most importantly, keep good records; the more organized you are, the less stressful this will be.”
