A sight for sore eyes

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 19, 2009 ) Jeremy Paxman isn’t the first thing that springs to mind when you think of a compilation of the very best that Britain has to offer, but he, along with other famous faces, has been involved in compiling a guide to the nation’s must-sees…

The modern-day ‘Grand Tour of Britain’ covers an eclectic range of the best of British, including beauty spots, cathedrals, castles, art works and music festivals.

Whilst the credit crunch has meant that British holidaymakers are increasingly opting to stay closer to home for the holidays, a recent survey revealed that the average Brit had visited just two per cent of the nation’s 1,200 towns and cities.

This new guide, which was published in this month’s Country Life magazine, aims to change all that and make locals and tourists look at Britain through new eyes.

Mark Hedges, Editor of Country Life, said, “The guide will help to provide inspiration for families as the recession bites and expensive foreign holidays lose their appeal.

“As our experts highlight, we have such a wonderfully rich heritage in this country that spending the summer here would be no hardship at all.

“This list offers the cultural journey of a lifetime,” Mr Hedges added.

Amongst the famous names helping to compile the guide were BBC sports presenter Clare Balding and theatre supremo Julian Lloyd-Webber.

Clare Balding chose the top sporting events and opted for Derby Day, an Ashes Test at Lord’s Cricket Ground, a Wimbledon men’s semi-final and a Premiership game at Old Trafford.

Amongst the beauty spots included in the guide were Ludlow Castle in Shropshire, the Black Mountains in Wales and the view from Westminster Bridge in London.

Chatsworth House in Derbyshire and Castle Howard in North Yorkshire made the ‘must-see’ list, along with the Tower of London, Borough Market and the newly renovated St Pancras Station.

Scarborough in North Yorkshire has been having a very successful time of late – check out our news story from Monday about it being voted Europe’s most enterprising town. The seaside resort was also on the list, along with Kew Gardens, the British Library and the Glastonbury music festival.

Great Britain indeed.
