(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 26, 2009 ) KAMPALA, Uganda—Volcanoes Safaris, a unique great ape ecotourism business that specializes in mountain gorilla safaris to Uganda and Rwanda, recently named John Webley as the Director of Sales and Marketing for the Western U.S.A and Western Canada. Webley, who will be working in conjunction with Director of Marketing Jane Behrend, has been heavily involved in gorilla tourism in Uganda and Rwanda since the early 1990s.
Webley was instrumental in the development of gorilla tourism in Uganda as well as assisting with the gorilla conservation efforts of institutions like Digit Fund and the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund. Born and raised in East Africa and educated in Kenya, England, and California, Webley comes from a family that has been heavily involved in wildlife conservation: his father is still actively involved in the conservation of the Black Rhino’s in Kenya. After completing a degree in International Business and Marketing at UCLA in the 1980s, he began a lengthy career in travel and tourism in Africa while based in the U.S.
He worked with African Travel in Los Angeles for three years, moved on to Abercrombie & Kent in Chicago, and then ventured out on his own with his company, John Webley’s Odyssey Outposts. Since 1996, his career has solely focused on sales to Africa, initially covering both North and South America, and then focusing primarily on North America. His own company covers the United States and Canada, along with his role as Marketing Director along with Jane Behrend at Volcanoes Safaris.
Through his commitment and dedication to gorilla tourism in Uganda and Rwanda in combination with his sales expertise in African travel, John spreads the message to tour wholesalers, travel agents, non-profit special interest groups, and travelling clients.
