During a recent interview, Stanley explained the journalism technique to photographing an event. “Family gatherings are a perfect time to take pictures. I move around discretely as I photograph children in the pool, teenagers playing volleyball or adults playing horseshoes.”

When asked about posed photos of families together, Stanley said, “Yes, people often like to get some group pictures too. It is often best to get this out of the way early, so the family can change into appropriate clothing for enjoying activities, especially if it is an outdoor event. When dressing for the photos, they should wear bright, solid colors rather than prints, stripes and plaids.”

According to Stanley Shelton, a professional photographer is likely to get everyone’s cooperation as he quickly and efficiently helps them pose for pictures. He will take several shots of each group pose to ensure getting one that pleases everyone. “Variety is good for family gatherings; first, I get the group shots out of the way, and then I just move around and discreetly photograph everyone being themselves and having a good time.”
