(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 11, 2009 ) GALVESTON, Texas – Galveston Island is pleased to announce that it has been selected as the number one attraction in Texas by leisure travelers outside of the state according to a report prepared for the Office of the Governor, Economic Development and Tourism.The announcement, along with recognition of the Texas travel industry and its important contribution to the economy, will be made May 12, 2009, at 10 a.m. during a press conference for Texas Travel and Tourism Week.

A top attractions survey is conducted annually by D.K. Shifflet & Associates, Ltd. in McLean, Virginia on behalf of the Governor’s Office in order tolearn which attractions are popular in the state. Surveys were mailed on July 14, 2008, to a panel of domestic leisure travelers who had traveled to and within Texas by August 22, 2008.The survey reports top-of-mind attractions for leisure travelers to Texas on trips more than 50 miles from their home.

The 32 mile long island sits just 50 minutes from Houston and offers newly replenished beaches, world class attractions, historic stories and a variety of restaurants and lodging. Tourism in Galveston stimulates an $800 million economic impact to the Island with five million visitors annually.
