OSCAR WINNING 'Slumdog Millionaire' Spotlights Indian Intelligence and Determination, American Degree Evaluator Urges Acceptance of Indian Three-Year Bachelor Degrees
The story of an orphan and Mumbai slum resident's unlikely "Do You Want to Be a Millionaire" TV success is wowing audiences and critics, winning 8 OSCAR awards. But people should recognize India for its superior education, not its slums.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 16, 2009 ) Fort Lauderdale, FL -- The story of Mumbai orphan and slum resident Jamal Malik's outrageous TV game show success is exciting viewers and critics alike. But according Sheila Danzig, who heads a foreign academic credential and degree evaluation agency, Career Consulting International (www.TheDegreePeople.com), India should be recognized more for its excellent system of education, not the housing slums. "The film shows that intelligent minds can be cultivated anywhere, yet many of India's graduates from their rigorous educational system have met with discrimination when trying to have their degrees recognized in the United States," Danzig says.
Whereas a graduate from the U.K., Australia, Norway and many many other countries with a three-year bachelor's degree has little trouble in the US having it accepted for work or further eduction as equivalent to a US bachelor's degree, an individual who earned a three-year bachelor's degree from India has to work to find American graduate schools to accept his degree for entry into their program - even though the Indian educational system is closely modeled on that of the U.K. Interestingly some of the nations top graduate programs such as Wharton and Columbia University will consider the Indian 3 year graduate for admission. But there are over 2000 universities in the US and it is an uphill battle to gain universal acceptance. Danzig wonders why the Indian degree has been almost singled out in having this problem.
If the value of your degree is not to depend on the color of your skin, the Indian three-year bachelor's degree must be accorded its proper value as an international credential. CCI has lead the fight to have the three year academic degree gain acceptance in the US.
Does the Value of Your Degree Depend on the Color of Your Skin?
Indeed, a 2005 study by Sheila Danzig and John Kersey, President of Marquess Educational Consultants Limited, concluded that the Indian and British educational systems are materially equivalent. Their conclusion: "If the value of your degree is not to depend on the color of your skin, the Indian three-year bachelor's degree must be accorded its proper value as an international credential."
"When we started including this study and other documentation about the 3 year degree with our evaluations showing that the number of clock hours of the 3 year Indian degree exceeded the clock hours of a US bachelor's degree, the rate of acceptance of Indian three-year degrees increased dramatically," said Danzig, whose company evaluates international academic educational credentials. "When the arguments are laid out objectively, employers and admission officers understand the inequity and accept the equivalency to a US bachelor degree.
"This has a serious impact on people's ability to immigrate, get higher education and obtain employment," adds Danzig. "We are very proud of what we are doing to right this wrong."
