Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative to Become First Tenant in Cleveland’s District of Design
The move is supported by the Cleveland, Gund and Kent T. Smith Foundations.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 22, 2009 ) Kent, OH - Kent State University’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC), part of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, will soon relocate to a Euclid Avenue address in downtown Cleveland, placing the Collaborative within Playhouse Square and directly on Cleveland’s refurbished Euclid Corridor. The downtown Cleveland area surrounding Playhouse Square, from East 13th to East 18th Streets is envisioned as a “District of Design”, to include architecture, engineering, design and planning firms and programs.
The move is supported by the Cleveland, Gund and Kent T. Smith Foundations.
“Kent State University continues to search out ways to work creatively with the city of Cleveland and collaboratively with other like-minded institutions across our region,” says Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton. “We continue to be grateful for the generous foundation and community support that the Cleveland Urban Design Center enjoys, and look forward to being a ‘front door’ to Cleveland’s legendary Playhouse Square. What a great way to support our region and our anchor city, Cleveland.”
Cleveland’s Sandvick Architects has donated design services that will help create a new space for the CUDC at its new address at 1305 Euclid Avenue, in a now-vacant two-story building. The first story is envisioned as street-level exhibition space and part of the second floor will allow expanded meeting space for the Collaborative to work more closely with Cleveland State University and Playhouse Square. The second floor will also provide classroom space.
“This move will become even more important as the Euclid Corridor continues to grow,” says College of Architecture and Environmental Design Dean James Dalton. “We envision foot traffic into our first floor exhibit space and additional benefits from being in Playhouse Square.”
Academic programs moving to the new location include graduate programs in architecture and urban design. The Urban Design Center, also a part of the Collaborative will also relocate to the new address. The Urban Design Center provides urban planning services across Northeastern Ohio.
