(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 21, 2008 ) Miami-Dade, Fl – Rick Bisio, noted author and franchise consultant recently visited Hialeah, Florida where he spoke in front of a group of college students. One student asked what it means to be awarded a franchise as opposed to buying one. Rick explained, “The term, awarding, came into widespread use in the 1980s. It reflected franchisors’ collective realization that it was in their best interest to work with quality franchisees who would present assets to the brand. Today, high quality franchisors focus on awarding franchises to the best candidate. The person in charge of franchise development is focused on bringing a partner for the franchisor, someone who demonstrates potential to be thriving in that particular franchise system.”

Some students were still confused. One asked, “If I buy a franchise, am I being awarded a franchise?” Rick answered, “Yes, but to say you are buying a franchise implies you have control over the process, like buying food at the grocery store. If a franchisor says they are selling you a franchise, it could bring to mind dealings like you might have had at a used car lot; you face a heavy handed sales person whose intention is to close the deal and never see you again. Professionals in the franchising business like to refer to the transaction as awarding a franchise because it sounds more like a mutual agreement where everyone comes out a winner. Also, when you acquire a franchise, you receive on-going support and training; closing the deal is not the end of the relationship.”

The workshop was a real eye-opener for the students who thought that going into the franchise business was a guarantee for success. Rick said, “When franchising was young, many franchisors thought that if they provided a successful model and adequate training, anyone could succeed. They have since discovered that even a superior business model run by a brilliant franchisor could fail if it was populated with the wrong franchisees.”

Rick explained the process of researching franchises to find the one that best suits one’s needs. He also said that at the same time, the franchisors will be investigating the entrepreneur to see if they possess the skills required and that they have the right personality for the position. Rick concluded, “the franchise education process will be one of reciprocal discovery. When you find the system that is good for you, and you reach the end of the discovery process, you should have the belief that you will be working with people you like and trust and who share your drive to be successful.”
