(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 20, 2008 ) Las Vegas, NV -- Many of the old buildings, most residential houses, that once hid escaped slaves have been torn down, but in the case of the George Gammon House in Springfield, Ohio, there is a movement to attempt to save it and restore it.

"This is no easy task," said Beverly Gray a Chillicothe, Ohio member of the Ohio Underground Railroad Association. "Few of the old homes can get enough people interested in saving or restoring them."

According to a special report by the Toledo Blade back in May of 2004, "Ohio is rich in Underground Railroad history. More than 600 sites have been identified that were at one point part of the system that helped slaves who escaped from the South and found refuge in northern Ohio, Michigan, and Canada. But more than 150 of those places have been demolished, and preservationists say the state is likely to lose many more as the buildings age and developers eye the land for new homes and businesses."

Now, another group of individuals has taken it upon themselves to educate people about these historical homes. A representative of the group will be in Las Vegas on Dec 6th at 1pm to discuss the restoration efforts in Ohio.
