(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 02, 2008 ) Cyprus - TheMoveChannel.com, the leading international property portal, announces a number of new properties in Cyprus:
· Apartment in Southern Cyprus (£603,560, 3 bed flat, exclusive properties walking distance from Limassol beachfront promenade)
· Villa in Souni (£326,830, 3 bed, close to the city but peaceful surroundings, luxury location)
Properties in Cyprus in Cyprus are unlikely to be an investment opportunity UK investors have considered in the past, so TheMoveChannel.com provides an overview of Cyprus.
The rivalry between APOEL and AC Omonia has existed since Omonia was formed in 1948 due to a political disagreement. The rivalry has since intensified due two teams being direct rivals successful in Cypriot football. We take a look at the history of both teams.
APOEL F.C.
APOEL F.C. was founded in 1926 (as POEL- the A added when the club expanded to include an athletics team) and is one of the founding members of the Cyprus Football Association.
The team were very successful in the 70s but had a difficult period in the 80s, which culminated in them drawing Turkish side Beşiktaş J.K. in the European Cup in 1986.
This was the first time that a Cypriot team faced a Turkish side in a European football tie and the Cypriot government prohibited APOEL from playing against the Turkish team. This resulted in APOEL being banned from Europe for two years, although the penalty was later reduced to one year after an appeal.
In 2002, the football team embarked on an impressive European run, playing ten games before being knocked out; an impressive feat for a Cypriot club. One very famous former player was the Liverpool legend Terry McDermott who was at the club for one season at the twilight of his career in the mid 80s.
AC Omonia
Athletic Club Omonia Nicosia was founded in 1948 and became members of the Cyprus Football Association.
AC Omonia was formed when APOEL sent a letter to the Greek Gymnastic-Athletic Association insisting that they broke their non-political stance. This resulted in a number of players leaving the club and setting up AC Omonia.
Omonia has won 19 league championships - a record it shares with fierce rivals APOEL – and 12 Cypriot Cups and is by far the most supported team in Cyprus. Cyprus Football Association declared them to be the team of the 20th century, remaining the only team to have won the Cypriot Cup 4 times in a row, between 1980 and 1984.
Since 1999, Omonia has shared, with their city rivals APOEL and Olympiakos Nicosia, the 22,859 seater Neo GSP Stadium, which is the biggest arena in Cyprus.
Omonia’s most successful period was in the 70s. They also produced the European Golden Boot winner in 1976, when striker Sotiris Kaiafas scored 39 goals - an accolade still considered the greatest achievement by any Cypriot player.
The Fans
The majority of APOEL fans are perceived as right-wing but there are no strong ties between the supporters and any political party.
Omonia's fans are considered to be left-wing in their majority. Unlike the other teams of Cyprus, Omonia is so popular that they have a lot of supporters from all around the country and their fan base consists of around 35% of the Cypriot people.
