(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 30, 2008 ) Newport, KY — The Saratoga Street homes in Newport were opened to the public yesterday during an event hosted by the Housing Authority of Newport.

The properties, which were once occupied by empty lots and dilapidated buildings, are now the site of eight attractive, new homes. The homes have made an astounding positive impact on the Newport community, Newport City Schools and Campbell County as a whole.

John I. Gilderbloom, Ph. D from the University of Louisville, is a leading scholar of Hope VI housing developments across the nation. He has been evaluating the Newport development for ten years.

“I’ve traveled the world researching and speaking about Hope VI housing developments, and Newport’s is one of the best in America,” Gilderbloom stated. “The Housing Authority’s thoughtful planning and execution has made this program incredibly successful in the Newport community.”

Newport is the smallest city in the country to receive a Hope VI grant.

The open house included guided tours of the homes, blueprints of the energy-efficient construction, and before and after statistics of area property values, home prices and money generated for Newport City Schools.
