Multigenerational living & Caregiving - Part 3 by Gregg Kroman, Executive Director, CashLTC.org

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 23, 2008 )
“Possibility” is not about something remote or something that may happen out in the future. This view of “Possibility” has an immediate and powerful impact on who we are, how we live our lives, how we manage consequences and how we see things in the present when we have the ability to make decisions that affect our future.

This view of “Possibility” has the power to move, redirect, impact, touch, and inspire us to shape our actions, and to affect our end results. Many of us will return to our families and our communities when in need, with a renewed and long lasting commitment to contributing to the lives of those with whom we live and work. As our population ages and economic storms multigenerational and community living will be a part of America’s future landscape on a larger scale.

In today’s and future economic environments, this awakening may be the most prudent pathway for us to take. History has a way of repeating itself for self reflection. I propose the time is now here for all of us to exhume compassion, respect, love, consideration, ideas, preparation, and resources with our friends, families and associates, for the benefit of all.

When I rewind back to my childhood in Minnesota, I lived with my Mom, Dad and two older brothers in a 1600 sq. ft. single car garage home with one TV. We had the family dinners and had our own brand of dysfunction like many families. Through those years we all knew that we could count on each other when things went well or not so well.

I admit that in my drive to succeed I misdirected that part of me. I moved from my roots and bought a 5,000 sq. ft. home for a family of three with a very minute sense of community. I acknowledge a diminished anchorage to what helps families and communities remain strong during challenging times - emotionally and economically.

In 1972 my grandmother was diagnosed with Senile Dementia, which we later learned was Alzheimer's Disease. My family provided care in our little home, but we learned we were not equipped or emotionally prepared to handle the type of care she required. Within two years she was admitted to a nursing facility and passed away four years later. While the family was able to provide love and support, the financial and emotional strains were devastating for Mom and her siblings. I will never forget that chapter of my family’s history as a reminder of the core values needed for my family, friends, associates and my community now and in the future.

Home health care and facility care usually brings on financial and emotional trauma so it is extremely important that we Prepare2Care to open our homes, compassion, and resources ahead of time to manage the consequences of a Long Term Care event.

There are “Possibilities” of successful preparedness before a chronic illness happens. A good planning example to use is a married individual standard underwriting classification who can purchase an excess of a $200,000 pool of money with Cash4Care / Home4Care focus to pay anyone for anything including the unpaid family caregiver.

If the policyholder needs more basic home care services from a home health care agency, some policies can be adjusted to pay for the higher costs of basic home health care services up to $300 a day. More yet, if skilled professional services are required in the home, progression benefits can derail the elevated costs up to $600 a day. Premiums for this type of Cash4Care / Home4Care policy focus with or without a guaranteed purchase option to fight inflation average monthly premium by age of issue: 50 $59.41, 55 $75.20, 60 $97.95, 65 $141.94, 70 $228.86 depending on the carrier you select.

You can add other inflation options, flexible assisted living coverage, restoration of benefits, shared care, survivorship and return of premium. Our Cash4Care /Home4Care advisors can help find the benefit combination to fit your family’s need and budget. Just click the “Get a Quote” feature on the site.
