Westside Auto Pros Advises Drivers About Check Engine And Service Engine Soon Lights

Many people overlook their "Check Engine" and "Service Engine Soon" lights. They don't realize just how important these lights are.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 12, 2008 ) Des Moines, Iowa September 10, 2008--Many vehicle owners are perplexed by the “check engine” or “service engine soon” light comes on in their automobiles. These lights can be confusing to a great number of people because they are so vague. Ron Haugen, owner of Westside Auto Pros suggests to take your vehicle to a mechanic to have an engine light issue checked out.

Some vehicles have both a “check engine” and a “service engine soon” light. The “check engine” light works to warn drivers of possible problems in the engine’s fuel, exhaust or emissions system. The “service engine soon” light is meant to warn people that maintenance needs to be taken care of with the vehicle.

Newer models of vehicles have engine lights that can present in two different colors-red and yellow. When the engine light illuminates in yellow, drivers should have their vehicle checked at their convenience. When the light is red, however, drivers should pull over immediately and turn off the vehicle. Ron Haugen says that drivers who fail to do so may cause further damage to their vehicles.

There are many possible diagnoses that mechanics can find when a vehicle gets taken in for a check engine light. “Most mechanics will use a computerized diagnostic code scanner to try and figure out what the problem could be” explains Ron Haugen. “The scanners can help show issues that the onboard vehicle computers may be having.”

The onboard computer in the vehicle runs through a series of checks each time the vehicle is started up. If the computer finds an error in these checks, the “check engine” light or the “service engine soon” light will come on, signaling an error.

If one of these lights are on in your vehicle, have a certified mechanic inspect your car for any issues. “This is definitely an issue best left to an experienced mechanic” says Ron Haugen.
