WestSideAutoPros.com Tells Drivers What They Need To Know About Changing Oil

Many owner’s manuals and Quick Oil Change places will tell you it’s fine to drive over 3,000 miles between oil changes. What you might not know is that unless you are driving under light services, this is not true.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 12, 2008 ) Minneapolis, MN -- John Shanderuk says that drivers need to change their oil every 3,000 miles or every 3 months. Oil isn’t just for lubricating the engine, it’s also used for cleaning. Therefore, oil has additives and detergents in it that break down over time, making it so the dirt and sludge can clog your engine. “It’s just like how cholesterol in your body clogs up your veins then you don’t get enough blood where you need it”, says John Shanderuk. This can cause thousands of dollars in engine repairs.

Some car companies say that if you use synthetic oil, you won’t have to change your oil for 10,000 miles. When you do this, moisture from the engine stays within the oil. The moisture then can freeze during cold months, freezing passages that vent excess pressure out of the engines. This, in turn, can make engine seals lead, and, in some cases, pop out, losing all of the engines oil.

Another problem with infrequent oil changes is that sometimes the oil will gel in the oil pans. This starves the engine for oil. There are also major problems with oil pump clogging. If this pump gets clogged, it also starves the engine of oil. “Car companies don’t tell you about these problems because they want to sell more cars!” John Shanderuk exclaims.

There are a lot of different types and brands of oil. Most of it is “marketing hype”. Most cars will use 5-30 for cold weather, and 10-30 for warm weather. Synthetic oil also flows better on cold weather. The most important thing about oil is that you change it often.

The best place you can go for an oil change is to a trusted mechanic. Quick oil change places say that they can do a complete vehicle inspection while you get your oil changed. It takes 30-45 minutes for a vehicle inspection, and quick oil change places depend on efficiency to make money. Therefore, go to a well-trusted mechanic who will have the right tools, parts and filters to do a thorough, complete job for your oil change.

If you do go to a quick oil-change, take a look at who’s doing the work. Look at their tools. Don’t fall for any of the extra things they try to sell you. The cost of having synthetic oil is not worth it. You still have to change it out every 3,000 or 3 months.
