Bruker Announces First Handheld XRF with Silicon Drift Detector

Bruker’s innovative TRACERturboSD offers unprecedented resolution and count rates in advanced metals analysis, including scrap sorting

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 08, 2008 ) Kennewick, WA- Bruker AXS Handheld Inc. announced a major technology breakthrough, its TRACERturboSD, the first handheld X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) instrument that uses a Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) for dramatically improved speed and sensitivity. Bruker's proprietary SDD, previously only available in its laboratory instruments, offers unprecedented resolution and count rates. With this announcement, Bruker builds on its long tradition of being the technology leader in the handheld XRF industry:

• 2001 - First tube-based handheld XRF
• 2004 - First vacuum handheld XRF; co-invented with NASA

The revolutionary TRACERturboSD, with integrated SDD, offers unparalleled speed and sensitivity, previously found only in much more expensive laboratory systems. The TRACERturboSD provides unprecedented speed in metal scrap sorting – this speed will translate into much faster sorting and valuation within any scrap operation. Also, in scrap sorting the proprietary Bruker SDD technology will enable users to better analyze sophisticated light element alloys such as aluminum and titanium, without the use of a vacuum or helium attachment. In addition, using joint Bruker-NASA vacuum technology, combined with the SDD, provides the best sensitivity possible in a handheld XRF instrument.

Frank Laukien, President and CEO of Bruker Corporation, said, "We are proud indeed to announce this cutting-edge handheld XRF instrument, building on our technology leadership position in XRF in general."

John Landefeld, Vice President of Bruker AXS Handheld, indicated: "This breakthrough continues a Bruker tradition of technology leadership, going back to the initial introduction of tube-based XRF handhelds in 2001. Following the joint NASA-Bruker development of vacuum technology for handhelds in 2004, Bruker proves, once again, to be the technology leader in handheld XRF scientific instrumentation."

"The scrap industry will be pleased to find that handheld XRF provides the speed and light element capability of more expensive systems,” added John Patterson, Bruker Handheld's Director of Marketing and Product Management.
