Massachusetts Farmer represents New England Emu Association Nationally
Emu Association Presidents Meet in Harrisburg
(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 01, 2008 ) Harrisburg, PA - According to USDA there are over 100 emu farms scattered across the New England states of Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island. The New England Emu Association (NEEA) is an affiliate of the American Emu Association, a national organization that supports the emu industry by promoting research and public awareness of emu products. Along with current American Emu Association (AEA) Board of Directors, State Affiliate presidents met on July 17, 2008 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for their annual pre-convention meeting. The New England Emu Association (NEEA) was represented by Stanley Johnson and NEEA board member, Dee Dee Mares, both of Gill, MA.
Discussions at the convention included agriculture and legislative issues, proposed research projects, soaring fuel and feed costs and other industry concerns. Emu are raised across New England for their lean red meat but the farmers are also finding a profit in the other co-products. The fat is turned into health and beauty products, the feathers and hide are used in the fashion industry, while the large green eggs are sought after by egg artists and crafters.
"Our member raise emu without the use of growth hormones or antibiotics,” said Mares. “Emu produce a high-protein, low-fat, nutrient-packed red meat." Emu meat and emu oil products can be ordered from individual producers or found at retail in specialty food stores, health food stores and retail establishments around the country. For more information about the New England Emu Association or where to find emu meat and other emu products in New England, call (508) 285-3169.
