FEMA Awards nearly $1.6 Million to Los Angeles County for Firefighting Coordination Resources

"Total dollars committed to this grant equal $2,103,651."

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 27, 2008 ) OAKLAND, Ca. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has committed $1,577,738 to assist Los Angeles County with costs associated with the coordination of field personnel and resources used to battle numerous wild land fires in October 2007.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department activated its Emergency Operation Center in coordination with field personnel in order to provide services and swiftly deliver and communicate emergency information to the public and local officials within their jurisdiction. The Sheriff's Department provided assistance with evacuation, fixed post positioning and traffic control of evacuated areas. It set up an inter operability trailer command post for uniformed personnel and first responders to communicate effectively - specifically in Malibu and the Santa Clarita communities. Generators were utilized for the command post. The department’s aircraft was also used to fight the wildfires and conduct aerial reconnaissance.

Total dollars committed to this grant equal $2,103,651. FEMA provides 75 percent of the total under its Public Assistance Grant program. Of the remaining costs, the state of California will cover 18.75 percent with Los Angeles County responsible for the balance.

FEMA’s Public Assistance program provides reimbursements to state and local government agencies and certain non-profits for eligible disaster-related expenses associated with debris removal, emergency protective measures, repair and restoration of damaged infrastructure. Debris removal includes sample testing for hazardous debris, hazardous ash and tree removal and monitoring of debris loading, hauling and disposal.
