Mark Maupin, Pontiac Michigan, Mason Contractor, Brick Layer and Chimney Repair Specialist Shares Tips on Hiring a Mason Contractor
Consumers beware…Be sure you know who you’re hiring for the job and get the contract in writing!
(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 13, 2008 ) Pontiac--Mark Maupin of Brick Repair, LLC, is a local Michigan mason contractor specializing in masonry restoration, chimney repair, and historic restoration. Mark shared some tips on hiring mason contractors at a special meeting with real estate investors and homeowners. Mark understands how frustrating roof and chimney problems can be for homeowners and investors. Even more frustrating is a botched job done by a contractor who has already been paid in full and he’s gone! No forwarding address, no such company listed, phone is disconnected.
Mark explains, “I have been working as a Michigan masonry contractor and chimney repair specialist for 12 years. During that time I have built many chimneys, brick walls, fireplaces, pillars, brick porches, and a done ton of tuck pointing. I am blessed because I am one of the few people who enjoy going to work every day. I love driving down the road and seeing a chimney or other brick structure that I built; I take pride in knowing I did a good job,” says Mark Maupin.
Mark went on to describe some poor workmanship he has observed. “Unfortunately there are a lot of poor masonry repairs out there. I have on many occasions had to redo a chimney job or rebuild porch that someone else tried to pass off as quality work. I have found chimneys crowned with mortar instead of concrete, brick replaced by stacking the bond, and countless times where a wall was no where near level or plumb,” Maupin said.
Mark said, “buyer beware; there are so many fly by night companies out there. Don’t be fooled by a slick talking salesman who says you need extensive chimney repair. If you have not inspected your chimney personally, don’t take the word of some guy off the street that hands you a business card or flyer. Your local handyman is not the person to use for chimney repair, or brick wall repair; the masonry field takes years to learn. Hire a professional masonry contractor for any of your masonry repairs.” Mark shared the following tips with the investors group:
• Use only insured contactors; feel free to ask them to show proof of liability insurance and workers compensation insurance
• Use a reputable company; check with the Better Business Bureau
• Ask for references; a good contractor will be happy to supply references
• Look at their previous work or photos of it; some contractors carry before and after photo albums which they are very proud to show new customers
• If your job involves demolition, use a company who specializes in demolition for proper clean-up and safety
• Get everything in writing; a good contract, covering all details of the job will protect the interest of the contractor as well as the customer
A lot of very good masonry contractors and chimney repair companies are in business. Don’t let a con man, or handy man taking on more than he can handle, ruin your brick repair experience.
