Plight Of The Malawian People
President Joyce Banda Seeks To Increase Humanitarian Aid
There is only one doctor for every 65,000 Malawians. The life expectancy is 52 years, while the infant mortality rate is 7.6%. Most children experience growth problems due to malnutrition. International efforts in the form of monetary aid were severely disrupted during the past two decades because of corruption on the part of Malawian officials. This severely curtailed the country’s development budget. Although support has been renewed, more than half of the citizens live below the international poverty line.
Unlike many other African nations, there is very little precious gemstone mining. Manufacturing and medium or heavy industry is virtually non-existent. Most of the people survive on cash-crop and subsistence farming. The main source of income for Malawi lies in the farming of tobacco, tea, and other crops.
Although more than half of the populace is immersed deeply in poverty, public officials have often impeded ameliorating the misery by engaging in corrupt activities. Luxury automobiles and expensive airplanes were purchased with funds designated for the purpose of alleviating the suffering of the poor. When other nations and private individuals learned of this at the turn of the millennium, funding stopped and those in need were hurt.
Almost as if designed by destiny, political developments arose which gave hope to the nation of Malawi.
