A lint screen does not catch all of the lint; some escapes into the vent tubes and doesn’t always find its way out side. It can be caught in a bend or elbow of the vent tube, or down in the slot where the lint screen goes. Lint screens also get a buildup of residue on them from dryer sheets and should be washed every few months with soap and water. Many people are not aware of this; eventually the lint screen can get such a build up on it that it will actually hold water and restrict air flow, causing a serious fire hazard.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety commission estimates that over 15,000 fires are associated with clothes dryers each year, accounting for an average of 10 deaths and 310 injuries along with millions in property damage. This number has dropped about 35% from the 24,000 annual fires in the late 1970’s.
