Word of the company’s recently reported narrower-than-expected first-quarter loss sent shares surging. Stocks continued the climb today, climbing 31 percent from Friday's close. Although Vanda Pharmaceuticals' loss widened to $19.2 million, or 72 cents per share, from $15.4 million, or 61 cents per share in the prior-year period, the loss was lower than expected. The company attributes the shortfall to higher research and development costs for a late-stage insomnia drug candidate.
Analysts, however, remain positive as the company approaches an expected U.S. Food and Drug Administration decision on its schizophrenia drug Fiapta, and prepares to release late-stage data on its insomnia drug candidate in June.
Vanda Pharmaceuticals' product portfolio includes Fiapta, a compound for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder; VEC-162, a compound for the treatment of sleep and mood disorders; and VSF-173, a compound for the treatment of excessive sleepiness.
The company is developing important new medicines to improve the lives of patients. It uses new technologies, including genetics and genomics, to inform its drug discovery, its clinical trials, and its commercial positioning of compounds.
