Advice and Tips from Dale Carnegie Training on How to Ace a Job Interview

Naugatuck, CT (April 23, 2008) When looking for a new or first job, people often focus all their energy on making their resume look perfect, best reflecting their experience and the work he or she is capable of doing. Once the resume is polished to perfection, it’s important to begin focusing on the next step in the “job search” process: the interview.

“Your resume may get you the interview, but the interview is what gets you the job,” says Peter Handal, President, CEO and Chairman of Dale Carnegie Training. “Both the resume and the interview are important components of finding a job, but the interview is where you can sell yourself to the company. The interview makes the job more real – you get to meet who you may be working with and the company gets to figure out if you would be a good fit.”

Here are some tips and suggestions on how to ace an interview:

Do Your Research: Never go blindly into an interview! Make time to research the company, the position, the industry, and anything else you can think of – even the person conducting the interview. Going in with an army of information allows you to be prepared for any question or comment. Remember, it’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared. Note, that they have probably also done a fair share of research on you. Find out what information they could have found out about you and be prepared to put a positive spin on any negative information they could have. Additionally, interviews are also a chance for prospective employees to learn about a company. After doing your research, come up with a few questions you can ask the interviewer.

Dress For Success: First impressions are lasting impressions, so be sure to dress appropriately. The first thing interviewers want to see is someone who is polished and looks put together (this is true even in “casual dress” industries). Dressing professionally provides a favorable impression and is a display of respect and courtesy

The Elevator Speech: One of the most daunting interview questions (which will always be asked) is “Tell me about yourself.” Write out a 30-second speech that you can use to answer this question. Your speech should highlight your achievements and make you stand out from the crowd. Each speech should be tailored to the job/industry in which you are interviewing so be sure to write out a few that will work for a variety of industries.

Follow Up: ALWAYS send a hand-written thank you note directly after the interview. Make sure the note is personalized to what you talked about in the interview. Hand-written notes are always appreciated and recognized and employers will notice the extra effort. If there are only a couple days between your interview and decision-day an email thank you will do just fine.
