The award was established in 1985 to recognize leaders of companies that place special emphasis on the development of its people to achieve business objectives.
Safety Marking is a successful New England contracting firm with facilities in Rhode Island, New York and headquarters in Connecticut. Employing 130, it provides safety line markings for interstates, highways, bridges tunnels and airports throughout the Northeast “one line at a time.”

Kelly said he was a true believer that Dale Carnegie will take anyone to the next level and that he supports all employees who wish to participate in the training. Besides employees, he has put his own daughters’ through the training and has served himself as a graduate assistant. Since Safety Marking’s beginnings in 1973, 10 per cent of the organization’s employees have gone through the Dale Carnegie Leadership program in the Western Connecticut Region with another six scheduled for the upcoming year.

Kelly was nominated by Safety Marking managers, all former Dale Carnegie graduates, Lucas Papageorge, general manager, David Steffens, operations manager and Patrick Clyne, safety director. Besides being at the helm of Safety Marking, Kelly is active in the community serving on the Board of Directors of the Merton House, the Wakeman Boys Club and the Connecticut Road Builders Association.
In 2005 the Leadership Award was presented to Greenwich Hospital. A nationally known recipient is Lee Iaccoca, formerly of Chrysler.
