Recycled Wastewater Worth Researching

EMAILWIRE.COM, May 19, 2013 ) Dallas, TX -- In an effort to go green, scientists say that looking into recycling wastewater may be a great solution to conserving natural resources.

Despite the cost, Flagstaff, Arizona wants to continue looking into reusing waste-water. The city isn�t hurting for water in anyway, but it is one of the leading cities in Arizona that use as much energy conservation as possible.

The city wants to use the recycled water for irrigation, not for people to drink. Because of this, the city has been met with support. However, city budget and state regulations have become a problem.

The Wildcat Hill treatment plant has not been able to produce A+ reclaimed wastewater consistently since it was modified at an initial estimated cost of $23 million in 2008-09. The city had to tap utility reserve funds to the tune of $10 million to supplement initial bond funding, and still the problems persist.

The other issue of public health safety stems mainly from advances in the ability to detect minute, inert fragments of contaminants still present in A+ treated wastewater. So far, there is no evidence that the recycled wastewater itself is unhealthy, but until a comprehensive epidemiological study is performed, it's impossible to conclude that it isn't.

For a small city, however, the costs of such a study might be prohibitive.

Also, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality will have to give the city a waiver for wastewater recycling, and they are aren�t in any hurry to do so. City Manager Kevin Burke has come up with a short-term solution to the problem, by providing citizens 12% less water to make up for the difference in potable water.

The city's potable water customers won't be affected and the city's water supplies are not in jeopardy -- the 12 percent solution will amount to just 5 million gallons a month, less than half of the potable water consumed by the city in just one day in June.

Bangkok Looks to Emphasize Green Buildings

EMAILWIRE.COM, May 12, 2013 ) Sydney, Australia -- The new 'green' buildings being constructed are being a point of focus in the new city planning scheme for Bangkok, with the design theme being called 'Bangkok, the Green City'.

Under the newest plans, which has recently been approved by the Babinet earlier in May, the goal of the push is to promote environmentally-friendly buildings that are in line with the Thai Green Building Institute guidelines. Such buildings will have an increase in floor-area ratios that are allowed for the standard set of buildings.

This expansion of ground ratios can be a difficult challenge for those in charge of developed, as they must increase budget along with the size of the buildings. The overall aim and hope by leaders is that the new green-focused scope will save energy costs over the long-term, according to to deputy director-general of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's City Planning Department, Panyapas Nopphan.

Before the task is officially taken on by anyone, the new city plan must be vetted. The overview and review of the concept will expire by May 15. Nopphan stated that the green standard will be in line with the many qualifications that are set forth by the TGB Institute, which has presided over the guidelines for the last half-decade.

Building management will include the preparing of green buildings, maintenance system establishment, and project design that will be seen through to completion. Landscaping will make up 19% of the total evaluation, will entail an investigative overview on the locations negative impact of the surrounding area. Water conversation makes up 7% of the overall score, while energy and atmosphere make up nearly a quarter of the score.

Materials will make up a 15% tally on the score, and focuses on the materials used in construction. Companies will need to focus on energy-saving and locally sourced recycled materials to maintain positive scores. Indoor environmental qualities will make up 20% of the total score as well, as the use of potentially harmful chemicals in pain and finishings must be avoided.

Kentucky Derby Festival Steps Up 2013 Go Green! Initiative with New Partnership with QRS Recycling

Stanford Study Shows Solar Panels Will Net Energy in Near Future

The reports have shown that the analysis looked over photovoltaic industry at the global scale, according to Mik Dale, who is a postdoctoral scholar. Dale also stated that unless PV panels pay back the energy that went into them, there is no successful form of solar energy. Thus, for the past 13 years during the panel boom, the industry was essentially unsuccessful, with panels taking up more energy than they produced.

Researchers are now expecting energy debt to be paid off within 3 years, according to the university report. That expectation comes from a decline in energy input, along with more durable panels and conversion efficiency rising. The university also reported that nearly 10% of all the world's electricity could be produced via PV by next decade.

�While the industry has been focused primarily on reducing financial costs of PV production, the study noted, energy cost reductions could be accomplished in a number of ways, including producing panels that require less energy use than silicon. More than 90 percent of the PV market is crystalline silicon,� Dale stated.

He also noted that newer forms of the modules can be created via a printing process, where the absorber material is screen printed by a roll. This takes the place of batch-like property of silicon.

Dale even hinted that the payback time could be further reduced if panels were installed in areas with high-quality resources such as the Southwest of the United States, the Middle east, or other predominantly sunny areas. "The PV industry is currently at the threshold," Dale stated. "It either became a net electricity producer around 2010, or in the worst case scenario, it will be in the next couple of years."

Study Shows New Efficiency Will Bring Down EU Emissions in Next Decade

The standards are set to be enshrined into the Ecodesign Directive and cover all minimum requirements for boilers and water heaters alike. There are also new labeling systems that will create transparency for their lifetime energy savings potential.

According to an Ecofys study, the proper implementation of the EDD would save over 400 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. That figure is �comparable to the impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions expected of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS),� while being far cheaper to implement.

Gas and oil-fired central heating boilers, which currently count for 80% of the market, account for nearly 15% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions, and for 17% when broadened to EU emissions.

In 2019, a new A Triple+ category will be introduced for super-efficient boilers, and from that point on, only renewable and co-generation technologies will qualify for the 'A+� label that enables a green-colored tab to be presented.

St�phane Arditi, senior policy officer for the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), said: "Europe�s energy efficiency targets have received a huge boost". He said the standards "will have a dramatic impact on cutting our carbon emissions and save Europe millions of euros on energy bills.�

Says the EEB, the measure will account for 15% of the EU's 2020 goal of a 20% improvement in energy efficiency as compared to 2005. The Ecodesign Directive will thus account for up to half of the 2020 goal.

The new study does, however, find that overall �lifecycle� of greenhouse gas emissions from Marcellus shale gas is 53% lower than goal in the carbon-equivalent terms.

�The analysis employs the most extensive data set of any [lifecycle assessment] of shale gas to date, encompassing data from actual gas production and power generation operations,� the study states.
