<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 13, 2009 ) Boca Raton, FL --- Since 1989, Trees for the Future has been helping communities around the world plant trees. Through seed distribution, agroforestry training, and their country programs, they have empowered rural groups to restore tree cover to their lands. Planting trees protects the environment and helps to preserve traditional livelihoods and cultures for generations.
Their mission and history demonstrate how dedicated they are to sustainable agroforestry.
Trees for the Future is an agroforestry resource center helping people in developing countries improve their rural livelihoods through the introduction of environmentally sustainable land management projects focused on beneficial tree planting. Most communities around the world recognize that they need to plant trees on their degraded lands if they are to improve their lives. They provide technical knowledge on agroforestry and sustainable development, along with planting materials so that communitites can return their degraded lands and struggling farms back to sustainable production. Beneficial trees minimize soil erosion, supply forage for animals, and provide a source of fuelwood, but planting trees is difficult when the canopy has disappeared, topsoil has been eroded, and the climate and growing conditions have changed. Through their network of technicians, volunteers, and community leaders world-wide, their program reaches remote areas and gives local people the knowledge and ability to rehabilitate their environment. Since 1988, Trees for the Future has helped thousands of communities in Central America, Africa, and Asia improve their livelihoods and their environment by planting nearly 65 million trees. Trees for the Future calculates that these trees remove over one and a half million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere each year. They are also active locally, educating students and communities about global issues, their role in the environment, and energy efficiency.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 02, 2009 ) ST. LOUIS -- A new National Corn Growers Association video on the subject of increasing sustainability in agriculture will make its debut Oct. 3, on the television program This Week in Agribusiness. The short video features family farmers telling the story of how better management and modern technology spells good news for both consumers and the environment.

“The only thing as important as growing a crop and getting a fair price is doing so in a way that is socially responsible and assures opportunities for the next generation of farmers and consumers,” said Darrin Ihnen, NCGA president and a corn grower in Hurley, S.D.

Every day on planet Earth we grow by over 200,000 people. That is 150 new people every minute. In the next 40 years our global population will exceed 9 billion people, up from 6.7 billion people today. Luckily, family farmers are making rapid progress toward meeting the needs of a growing world and doing it with the environment in mind.

“Sustainability isn’t some buzz word or novelty for a corn grower. We are living this every day and trying to do a better job with each crop we grow,” Ihnen said.

This Week in Agribusiness will air the video on Direct TV Channel 345 (RFD-TV) and Dish Network Channel 231 (RFD-TV) at 7 a.m. CDT Saturday, Oct. 3; 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. CDT Sunday, Oct. 4; and 8 a.m. CDT Monday, Oct. 5. It also airs on 20 TV stations in the Midwest and Great Plains regions. For details, see http://www.agbizweek.com.

You can also view the video online at: http://ncga.com/sustainability.

Founded in 1957, the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) represents approximately 36,000 dues-paying corn growers and the interests of more than 300,000 farmers who contribute through corn checkoff programs in their states. NCGA and its 48 affiliated state associations and checkoff organizations work together.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 01, 2009 ) Vienna, Va. — The apple harvest is in full swing. Now is a great time to make apples—in any form—a part of your daily diet. From cider or juice to sauce or fresh apples, the fall harvest presents the perfect opportunity to include more apples and apple products into your daily routine. Celebrate the changing of the season with America’s favorite homegrown fruit—apples!

Industry News
The latest U.S. apple industry forecast estimates that this year’s total crop will be roughly 241 million bushels of apples. That is equivalent to about 113 apples per person and is 4% larger than last year’s crop.

“This year’s crop is abundant. With so many tasty, convenient and affordable ways to use apples, this is going to be a great year for apples and apple consumers,” says Allison Parker MS, RD, Director of Consumer Health and Education for the US Apple Association.

New Ideas for this Season’s Crop
New and old varieties can be found at your nearest grocery store or farmers market for an incredible value. Are you a tart and crunchy apple fan? Or do you favor sweet and juicy varieties? No matter what your taste buds crave there is bound to be a variety that will satisfy you. Here’s a list of the top 10 varieties from across the nation:
1. Red Delicious - sweet, crispy and juicy; great for a snack or tossed in a salad.
2. Golden Delicious - mellow and sweet; a wonderful pie apple and also good in a salad.
3. Gala - crispy, juicy, very sweet; good for snacking or for applesauce.
4. Granny Smith - green flesh, very tart flavor; best for baking and pies.
5. Fuji - sweet flavor and firmness; try it in a salad, for sauce or just to snack on.
6. McIntosh - juicy, tangy, and tart with a tender, white flesh; a great applesauce apple.
7. Rome - mildly tart apple; primarily used for cooking.
8. Empire - crisp, juicy with a delightful sweet-tart flavor and creamy white flesh; a well known snacking apple.
9. Idared - tangy flavor and firm texture; good for snacking and baking.
10.Braeburn - crisp, juicy with a rich, spicy-sweet flavor; great for baking and on salads.

Fresh apples make a convenient, nutrient-rich, on-the-go snack. But did you know apples and apple products can be a great accompaniment to the center of your plate? This versatile fruit can be chopped up and tossed into salads, stir-fry’s, casseroles, and of course be served as a sweet, after-dinner treat. Make sure to check out the US Apple Association website for more recipe ideas and tips, and stay tuned for more as we move into the holiday season.

Healthy to the Core
The old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” continues to hold true. Apples are packed with soluble fiber and have high water content—both of which help keep you fuller, longer and may help you maintain a healthy weight. In addition, fiber helps promote heart health, decrease your risk for developing cancer and aid in good digestion. Furthermore, apples are a significant source of boron in the diet; a mineral important for bone health.

Want more “a-peeling” apple health benefits? Recent apple research out of Cornell University suggests that apples (especially the peel) contain powerful, naturally-occurring substances called phytochemicals that help inhibit breast cancer formation1. Another recently published study from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell indicates that the regular consumption of apple juice helps keep our minds sharp and may even delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease2.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 30, 2009 ) Berlin, PA - This year’s national convention for the American Emu Association was held in Orlando, FL. I. Michael Eppley who resides near Berlin, PA, is currently serving his third year on the American Emu Association board of directors and was re- elected president of the association during their annual Board of Directors meeting in July.

Emu may seem like an unusual livestock for the Keystone state; but Eppley, president of the Pennsylvania Emu Farmers Association (PEFA) is quick to point out that for most small-scale farms, mainstream agriculture is not cost effective. When looking for an alternative, many find emu farming attractive. “The birds are docile, quiet, easy to raise and they produce a number of marketable end products,” said Eppley. “Here in Pennsylvania many of our emu farms have evolved into integrated farming operations. They raise the birds, arrange for processing and then either sell the raw products or they have those raw products turned into end products which they sell.” Emu co-products include the fat which is turned into health and beauty products, the feathers and hide that are used in the fashion industry. Emu eggshells are sought after by egg artists and crafters. Fresh emu eggs are available seasonably. According to USDA there are over a hundred emu farms scattered across Pennsylvania.

PEFA is a state affiliate of the American Emu Association, a national organization that supports the emu industry by promoting research and public awareness of emu products.

Emu meat and emu oil products can be mail-ordered from individual producers or found at retail in specialty food stores, health food stores and retail establishments around Pennsylvania.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 30, 2009 ) West Springfield MA - For many New Englanders the Eastern States Exposition or “Big E” heralds the turn of seasons as it places the bounty of early autumn on display. This is New England's largest fair. Top name entertainment, major exhibits, history and agriculture, animals, rides, shopping, crafts, a daily parade and foods from around the world for 17 glorious days - September 17th – October 4th.

Holding strongly to its agricultural roots livestock still takes front stage for many of the scheduled events. Dairy judging, milking contests, oxen-pulls, sheep, poultry and horse shows and dog herding demonstrations abound. But over the last few years a new animal has been infiltrating New England agriculture – the Emu. And while you may not catch site of the birds themselves you will have the opportunity to learn a bit more about them and sample their products from some of the exhibitors.

Vermont Prime Emu Producers (VPEP) staffs a booth in the Vermont building where you can purchase a large assortment of emu oil products for health and beauty. The booth is manned by friends and family of the 4 farms which banded together to form VPEP. Representatives from Riverside Emus, Emus of Vermont, Bob-O-Link Farm, and Neshobe Farm are always happy to talk about the birds and emu farming. Just be warned their products have become so popular that it is not uncommon for a long line to form before their booth.

In the Massachusetts Building, the Chili Station, producers of award winning chili have specially crafted a new chili for this year – Emu Chili. Proprietor Jeff Belkin says that he is very “pleased with the taste of this new recipe and loves the heart healthy nature of the meat”. The ground emu comes from Songline Emu Farm of Gill MA.

On Massachusetts day, Thursday, Sept 24th, the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture will be giving awards to the winners of the 2010 Agricultural Calendar photo contest. 12 winning photos have been selected to be displayed in a beautiful calendar which represents the vitality and diversity of the Commonwealth’s farms, crops and products throughout the seasons.

One of the winning photos was taken by Dee Dee Mares of Songline Emu Farm in Gill MA showing 2 adorable emu chicks and an emerald green egg. Calendars will be available for sale inside the Massachusetts building.

So attend the fair, enjoy the beauty of this season and keep an eye out for the emus.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 28, 2009 ) DES MOINES, Iowa – Kemin Industries is pleased to announce the United States Food & Drug Administration has approved KemTRACE® brand Chromium Propionate for use in cattle.

“Kemin’s commitment to the cattle industry focuses on a blueprint for optimum performance and longevity,” says Dr. Chris Nelson, CEO and President of Kemin Industries. ”KemTRACE Chromium is an extensively researched and proven to be effective product designed to alleviate concern and optimize production efficiency while maintaining maximum nutritional value.”

KemTRACE Chromium Propionate is the only chromium source currently approved by the FDA for use in cattle. KemTRACE Chromium Propionate is a safe, highly bioavailable, and patented organic chromium source.

“Kemin is pleased to be the first to market with an approved chromium source for the U.S. cattle industry – a highly competitive and ever changing industry,” says Dr. Fernando Valdez, Director of Technical Services for Kemin AgriFoods North America. “The approval of KemTRACE Chromium Propionate immediately provides dairy and beef producers a new and powerful tool to optimize transition cow management.”

Chromium Propionate allows cattle to utilize energy efficiently. The primary role of chromium is to potentiate the action of insulin. Increased insulin activity promotes intracellular glucose uptake. As a result, more energy is available to the animal and the animal is better able to utilize its energy efficiently (Sumner et al., 2007).

KemTRACE Chromium Propionate is also approved for use in all classes of swine in the United States, as well as for growing and finishing swine in Canada. In addition, it is available for both swine and dairy cattle in Mexico.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 13, 2009 ) ST. LOUIS - (Food-Beverage-News.Com) The National Corn Growers Association Corn Board has elected Bart Schott of Kulm, N.D., to the position of first vice president for the 2010 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. Schott and his family are third- and fourth-generation farmers raising no-till corn, soybeans and wheat. He also runs a seed business.

"I am honored and humbled to be selected by my fellow board members to serve as the next first vice president of NCGA," said Schott. "We live in dynamic times and I'm excited to be a part of the change that can bring both opportunities and challenges for corn farmers and our customers in producing food, feed and fuel for our nation and the world."

Schott has served as chairman of the North Dakota Corn Council. He is a member of the NCGA Finance Committee as well as a board liaison for the Grower Services Action Team. Schott is also chairman of NCGA’s Bylaws Committee and a past chairman of the Association Relations Committee. Schott previously served as the NCGA Corn Board liaison for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and a member of the NCGA Biotechnology Working Group and the Research and Business Development Action Team. He and his wife, Linsey, have three children, Peter, Andrew and Micah.

In October, NCGA President Bob Dickey, a Laurel, Neb., grower, becomes chairman of the Corn Board and Darrin Ihnen, of Hurley, S.D., currently serving as first vice president, will become board president. Officers are traditionally rotated through the three positions each fiscal year.

The 15-member NCGA Corn Board executes the organization’s policy and strategic vision, as set forth by the Corn Congress, the semiannual meeting of delegates from affiliated state organizations. It also bears ultimate responsibility for NCGA’s financial affairs. Schott’s election needs to be ratified by the Corn Congress at its July 15 meeting in Washington, D.C.

Founded in 1957, the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) represents approximately 35,000 dues-paying corn growers and the interests of more than 300,000 farmers who contribute through corn checkoff programs in their states. NCGA and its 48 affiliated state associations and checkoff organizations work together to help protect and advance corn growers’ interests.
