<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 18, 2009 ) Atlanta, Georgia - One of America’s top tourist attractions is the White House in Atlanta, Georgia – yes, that’s right - Atlanta – property developer Fred Milani has built a 16,500 square foot exact replica of the President’s famous residence, complete with Oval Office, but now he has been forced to put it up for sale following the downturn in the US property market…

Ever since its creation seven years ago, the Atlanta White House in Georgia has been the subject of much controversy amongst residents of the wealthy North Druid Hills district.

The house comes complete with an Oval Office with a replica of George W. Bush's desk and a Lincoln bedroom with a picture of Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation painted onto a wall.

To the rear, the Atlanta property, which is an exact replica of the White House only smaller, has an impressive swimming pool and a sweeping staircase mirroring the original house.

The porch overlooking the 75-car parking lot is called the Truman Balcony, after the original one.

Whilst some of Mr Milani’s neighbours loathe the house, calling it excessive and an eyesore, some of them adore being close to something so unusual.

What has riled them most however is the level of interest the creation attracts - hoards of tourists from all over the world flock to see the house and take photos.

The credit crunch has claimed another victim in Mr Milani, who made his fortune building McMansions in a city that once couldn’t get enough of them, and he has reluctantly put the mini White House up for sale for just under $10m, a snip compared with the value of the Washington D.C. original.

Mr Milani said, “I still do not want to sell, but I will.”

“Really, I am not very political. The architect just asked, ‘How about I build you the White House?’ and I said yes. That is the whole story.”

When asked where he will live next, Mr. Milani suggested that he may build the Congress building across the street. (!)

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 26, 2009 ) Ever since Michael Jackson's untimely death, fans have been making the pilgrimage to his former home, Neverland, in the Santa Ynez Mountains above Santa Barbara - but now, Neverland's neighbours are determined to stop the home becoming a tourist trap, and have launched a group called 'Never' in order to protect the area's tranquility...

Residents of the rural Santa Ynez Valley in which Neverland sits are set to oppose any attempts to convert the remote ranch into a commercial venue, which could attract thousands of tourists each year.

Whilst property co-owner Thomas Barack hasn't proposed developing the site as yet, the 'Never' group, led by activist Bob Field, wants assurances that this will never happen.

Field says the area doesn't have the roads, police or other infrastructure to support crowds drawn to a large tourist attraction, which he said would disrupt the enclave's tranquility.

Jackson’s ranch is located about five miles north of the tiny wine country hamlet of Los Olivos. It’s one of the most beautiful spots in the country, blessed with rolling hills, vineyards and cool, damp air from the nearby ocean.

The residents are scared that the sprawling 2,800 acre Neverland could potentially be turned into a Graceland style destination, with die-hard Jacko fans making the pilgrimage year after year, just as Elvis fans do to Graceland in Memphis. (I'm ashamed to say I've made that trip and touched that green shag-pile carpet).

The estate agency firm overseeing the Neverland ranch has already received bids from several billionaires and apparently has even turned down a £65 million offer to develop the property.

In stark contrast to the Santa Barbara 'never' attitude, residents of Jackson’s hometown of Gary, Indiana, are hugely keen to have the star’s remains buried there, in the hope it would attract hoards of visitors.

New guidelines introduced in May require lenders to order valuations through third-party vendors called appraisal management companies that increase costs to prospective home buyers have led to more conservative valuations by many appraisers and a slowdown in lending, according to John Brennan, research director at the Appraisal Foundation, a Washington-based trade group. A low appraisal is one that comes in under the price a prospective buyer has agreed to pay for a property.

Appraisal management companies hire valuators who use automated systems and work at a discount, instead of experienced appraisers who have knowledge of neighborhoods and include factors that can increase a property's value, such as home improvements or proximity to schools.

Many real estate brokers are reporting in increase in deals falling through. Universal Mortgage Incorporation in Brooklyn, New York said that at least 15 sales fell apart due to appraisals that came in below the agreed upon price.

But appraiser say that lower valuations reflect what is happening in the market. 'When home values come in below the sales price, that's not the appraiser's fault, it's a reflection of the market,' said the Appraisal Institute, a Chicago-based professional group that represents more than 25,000 appraisers.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 21, 2009 ) New York, USA - The bright lights and buzz of New York attract millions of tourists from all over the world to sample a bite of the Big Apple each year – and everyone knows a city is so much more fun when you have a local to show you around – so, bearing that in mind, what could be better than having a celebrity local act as your personal tour guide? Tempted? Then read on…

Celeb spotting is a mainstay of any New York City break. I can lay claim to Cameron Diaz, at the entrance to Central Park near MOMA. At least I think it was her – it was raining hard and I didn’t have my glasses on….but, I’m sticking to that sighting. Piers Morgan in the Central Park boathouse restaurant was a less thrilling spot.

Anyway, the fact is, tourists love a bit of celebrity glamour and now, thanks to a volunteer tour organization called Big Apple Greeters, you can be guided around the city by a bona fide big name.

Big Apple Greeters is a non-profit founded in 1992 with a mission to ‘enhance New York City’s worldwide image and enrich the New York experience by connecting visitors with knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers.’

The ‘greeters’ connect visitors with New Yorkers of all ages, conversant in over 20 languages and they accompany visitors on two to four hour informal visits to New York City’s neighborhoods in all five boroughs.

Now, Big Apple Greeters has just started offering free personalised tours led by celebrities, all of whom ‘just want to show visitors the best the city has to offer and have a good time.’

Big names that have signed up so far include former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber and ‘Sopranos’ star Dominic Chianese, both of whom have been advertising their services at City Hall in the centre of NYC.

Chianese says he loves New York and wants to show visitors a good time and recently showed a Colorado couple around town and had lunch with them at one of his favourite spots.

But before you get too excited, you can’t select which celebrity acts as your guide. Celeb hosts will be randomly assigned.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 15, 2009 ) California, USA - Arnold Schwarzenegger seems to be reprising his role as the Terminator – terminating entry to 220 of California’s stunning state parks in a bid to protect the beleaguered state from suffering further in the recession…

Arnie has decided that state of California can no longer afford to run its parks. The state, one of the worst hit by the global economic downturn, is now facing a £16 billion budget shortfall and its Governor Mr Schwarzenegger is being forced to come up with new ways to economise.

Closing up the great outdoors would be taking away one of the great perks of Californian life. These proposed shutdowns would affect 80 per cent of the state’s nature reserves, historic sites and recreation areas as well as restricting access to 30 per cent of the state's coastline.

Affected areas would stretch from the mountains of the Sierra Nevadas to the beaches and wetlands of Big Sur, to the deserts of San Diego. All of the parks in the stunning Lake Tahoe are also earmarked for closure.

These national parks and sites cost a huge amount of money to maintain each year and California sees this as a way to start making up the huge economic shortfall.

Unsurprisingly, there is much opposition to the proposals, especially from conservationists who argue that closing the parks for a period of time could lead to irreparable damage and cutting down the number of rangers on duty could lead to an increase in vandalism.

Tourist bods argue that the planned closures may cause tourists to think again if planning a trip to the Golden State.

The Federal Government is also anti the plans and have threatened to seize control of the parks if Arnie insists on pushing ahead with his plans.

It seems California is not alone in these drastic proposals, though few other states are working on such a huge scale. Pennsylvania presented a budget proposal last month that would shut 35 of its 117 state parks.

“We really are just looking for ways we can keep those places open,” said David Siegenthaler, the National Parks Service's Manager for the state of California.
“In these economic times it is probably even more important that people have access to good places,” he added.

Critics also fear the closures could be irreversible. “Once those places are closed it becomes very difficult to re-open them,” said Traci Verardo Torres, of the California State Parks Foundation, which is protesting against the proposal.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 20, 2009 ) New York, USA - From July 4th this year, one of the most famous landmarks in the world will reopen fully to visitors – the first time the Statue of Liberty’s crown has opened since the 9/11 terrorist attacks…

These will be some of the hottest tickets around – the opening weekend of the famous Lady Liberty’s crown will no doubt entice hoards of visitors eager to welcome the tourist hotspot back.

The statue was closed to the public because of security concerns after 9/11. The base, pedestal and outdoor observation deck reopened in 2004, but the crown remained off-limits.

Come July 4th, tourists will now be able to view the breathtaking New York skyline from the top of the harbour once more.

It is a particularly appropriate reopening date as July 4th is American Independence Day and the status is a symbol for hope, freedom and opportunity.

Tickets are already being sold both online and on the phone and more than 50,000 visitors are expected to make the 168-step climb to the crown before it closes again in two years for permanent safety renovations.

The staircase, signage, exit and public address system will be improved in order to enable the park service to double the number of visitors climbing to the crown each day.

Tiffany Townsend, a Spokeswoman for the New York City Visitors and Convention Bureau said, “The Statue of Liberty is not only an iconic New York City attraction but an American symbol, and we expect there will be significant demand for tickets by locals and outside visitors alike.”

Visitor numbers will be limited to ten at a time and all groups will be guided by a park ranger. Three trips will take place each hour and places will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis – but booking must be done over the phone or online as there will be no walk up tickets.

Crown reservations may be made through the park’s ferry concession, Statue Cruises, at www.statuecruises.com or by phone at 877-LADY-TIX (877-523-9849). Tickets may be reserved in advance up to one year prior to the day of the visit.

The tickets will add £1.80 to the cost of reserved ferry fares, which are £7 for adults, £6 for seniors and £3 for children.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 31, 2009 ) One of New York’s busiest intersections and most famous tourist landmarks has been made a car-free zone in a bid to reduce the level of pollution and the number of accidents along stretches of Broadway…

Now the naked cowboy really has something to sing about. The famous Times Square busker, who wears a guitar, a cowboy hat and not much else, has become as much a part of the New York scenery as the neon lights above Broadway.

Now, tourists will be able to get a better view of him and move more easily around Times Square after cars were banned from the area in a bid to make the city more liveable.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has taken vehicles off the roads between 42nd and 47th Streets at Times Square and 33rd and 35th Streets at Herald Square, near the flagship Macy’s department store, to ease traffic at the ‘crossroads of the world.’

Tourists and shoppers will now be able to relax in special pedestrian plazas as part of the ‘Green Light for Midtown’ project. New pedestrian malls are also being created in both squares, providing more than three acres of new public space.

The city has scheduled events for the new areas throughout the summer, including a simulcast of the Tony Awards on June 7th in Times Square.

Barriers along parts of Broadway were put in place late on Sunday and on Monday parts of Times Square were like a street festival with street theatre and beach chairs.

“It’s good for traffic, it’s good for businesses and we think it is going to be great deal of fun,” city Transport Commissioner Janet Sadik-Khan said.

The area has long been notorious for its traffic jams and Ms Khan has announced plans to carefully monitor the situation until people became used to it. It will also help to ease traffic congestion in the surrounding areas.

The Transportation Department also said that Seventh Avenue will be expanded to four lanes through Times Square, which should improve travel times by about 17 per cent, and northbound vehicles on Sixth Avenue will move about 37 per cent faster through Herald Square.

Excerpt: If only they could have seen or known; maybe they did. Was moment of truth, that flash of common sense or confusion simply nothing more than a clouded memory? A clairvoyance experience is rare to those who do not acknowledge its existence.

Innocent lives of guilty experiences came together as they we’re supposed too with each one of them filling a position that had been orchestrated, played out or rehearsed many times before. Distress and challenge was a part of life known but need not linger in or absorbed. Young enough to shed even the dampest of sorrows, these Men and Women were ready!

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 28, 2009 ) Smithfield’s Chicken N Bar-B-Q announced they have “adopted” US Navy EOD Mobile Unit Three, a military unit currently deployed to southern Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The company plans on sending the unit a care package every month filled with cards, magazines, food, and other items the soldiers would enjoy.

The company became aware of the unit through their Facebook fan page, when one of the unit’s soldiers commented on how much he missed Smithfield’s Chicken N Bar-B-Q. Smithfield’s Chicken N Bar-B-Q sent the unit t-shirts and two cases of hushpuppy mix. The unit prepared the hushpuppies at their Memorial Day Cookout and “enjoyed having a taste of home,” according to the soldiers.

“We were so touched by the soldier’s excitement and appreciation that we have decided to “adopt” his unit, “said Richard Averitte, Marketing Director, Smithfield’s Chicken N Bar-B-Q. “We want to let them know we appreciate all they do in serving our country,” he added.

Smithfield’s Chicken N Bar-B-Q has a 40-year history serving the finest fried chicken and Eastern-North-Carolina-style Bar-B-Q, made fresh daily from family recipes and served home style in a family-friendly atmosphere. Smithfield’s Chicken N Bar-B-Q has over 30 locations in North Carolina as well as an online store where Bar-B-Q can be shipped anywhere in the United States.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 12, 2009 ) USA - Following the same pattern as last month, the USA reigned supreme on the TheMoveChannel.com’s April Top of the Props chart. Europe also features strongly in the chart, suggesting that investors are less willing to take risks on far flung destinations and instead want to put their money into tried and tested markets…

Our Top of the Props chart provides a monthly pop chart snapshot of the most popular countries on the site and last month, the USA triumphed, attracting the most interest from visitors to the site.

Take advantage of USA’s GO Zone

Now that the United States is entering the lowest point in its property market cycle and people are getting more and more serious about selling off their real estate stock no matter how cheaply, there are more opportunities than ever for investors.

Savvy buyers will be able to snap up an American property deal at well below market value that could have strong rental potential and, if you go into it with a long term view, could net you a healthy return.

If you are looking for a real bargain, America’s GO Zone could still be well worth considering. The Gulf Opportunity (GO) Zone covers the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina – including the states of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana – and offers Government incentives for property investors to purchase buy-to-let housing stock.

The incentives are for a limited period only and some end this year. As you will be buying property on land subsidised by the US Government, you will be getting excellent value for money.

Go Zone Investment Incentives allow you to write off 50 per cent of the property's assessed value in the first year. As an active investor, you can write off the deductions against ordinary income and capital gains, but this may well run out on December 31st this year.

There is also strong rental demand in the Biloxi area, with a shortage of 64,000 homes so rental potential will be very strong.

Pick up a Portuguese property

Portugal grabbed second place in April’s chart. Buying property in Portugal is no longer an exotic pursuit - especially for Brits and Europeans and areas such as the Algarve, the country’s southernmost region, have seen an explosion of resorts.

Portugal has been one of the countries most affected by the global economic crisis, according to a report by Cushman & Wakefield, a global real estate solutions company.

Where there is crisis, there is opportunity and bargain hungry buyers have been sniffing around Portugal’s tourist hotspots, hoping to snap up a great deal with strong rental potential.

Tourism is likely to remain strong in Portugal long term and thus rental potential looks strong. Development of a solid, upscale tourism sector is part of the Portuguese Government's economic growth strategy.

The sector's GDP contribution is expected to climb from 15.6 per cent in 2009 to 18 per cent by 2019, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council.

Currently, some 975,000 jobs in the country are tourism related. This number is expected to grow to 1,153,000 jobs, accounting for 22.1 per cent of the country's total employment by 2019.

Other movers and shakers

The land of la dolce vita look the bronze medal in Aprils chart, leaving the United Arab Emirates – long the poster child of property booms – trailing in fourth place.

Turkey and Spain took fifth and sixth places respectively, showing that, despite media scaremongering about the pain in Spain, it still proves popular with overseas investors and will likely never fall truly out of favour.

Old favourite France took seventh place, with Egypt yapping at its heels at number eight. Surprise entry Thailand, in a rare appearance in the top ten, took ninth place and Greece rounded off April’s Top of the Props chart at number ten.

Back in 1928 when a small town of Indiana collected its folks every year for a celebration at the local Fair, a gathering of strangers would join together to shape a new parallel of lives. This year was no different. Brought together by tragedy, two cousins would later embark on forbidden love to form a family of tales that drifted in all directions. Emerging from this tangled brood would be a soul that reached for greater heights, her name was Norma Jean. Chased as teenager girls are, Norma became the affection of a lad who watched from the other side of the tracks into a world he did not understand. Separated by war, they walked away with hope of another chance. From one end of the land to the tops of Nevada's highest mountains, these Misfits would stroll the Midways till dusty dusk's. As if played out on a screen of scripted illusion, escape into silence could not come too soon for some and yet others, left without notice.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 16, 2009 ) Los Angeles has indicated that the city could be heading towards a healthier property market with news that the first new high-rise downtown property development for twenty years – which will be shaped like a ship’s sail – is to be built on the site of the 50 year old Wilshire Grand hotel…

The sparkle may have been noticeably absent in the USA property market of late but a new development has sparked hope that the market could be on the road to recovery.

Thomas Property Group’s plan includes the construction of a £673 million 80-storey glass-walled building with a slanted profile that would be built on property owned by development partner Korean Air Company.

The design also includes a 40-story hotel and condo tower and an 18,000-square-foot public park that would replace the 50-year-old Wilshire Grand hotel.

The planned building will be the first new downtown construction project since the property market started its downward curve and the first major office high rise for 20 years.

The median price for new homes downtown has plummeted from £360,000 in the first quarter of 2008 to about £284,000 in the first quarter of this year, a 21 per cent drop, according to tracking firm MDA DataQuick. The median price for all new condos in Southern California dropped about 14 per cent during that time.

But now, optimism is starting to return and experts are now hoping that the plans will be the first step in a rebirth for the country’s second largest city.

Thomas Property Group’s Chairman and Chief Executive James A. Thomas said, “The city’s first major office high-rise in some 20 years will satisfy a rising demand for business real estate as downtown grows after the recession.

“There is no place that has the amenities, the attractions that downtown Los Angeles has.

“Construction costs are down, material costs are down. It’s ideal to be placing yourself to be ready to ride the wave when the recession turns and the economy moves up,” added Mr Thomas.

Thomas Properties and Korean Air planned to seek financing from lenders and investors on both sides of the Pacific and begin construction in 2011.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 15, 2009 ) OK, so we know that Barack Obama is a powerful man but this latest plan sounds like a tall order even for him – the White House is discussing cooling the earth’s air as a potential emergency option to combat the threat of global warming…

Startlingly, this radical idea is not a new one – but when it was bandied around previously, it was immediately dismissed as implausible and prohibitively expensive.

But, now, as the climate change situation reaches breaking point, the President’s new Science Advisor, John Holdren, has brought up the idea once again.

He is concerned that, once global warming reaches certain milestones, such as the total loss of summer sea ice in the Arctic - which could potentially happen within the next six years - its effects will not be able to be reversed, which could pose a very serious threat for the future.

Some may say the idea of artificially cooling the air smacks of a Government trying to play God, but John Holdren says that, because global warming is happening so rapidly, emergency options are now needed.

Whilst he has said that such an experimental measure would be a last resort, Holdren has said, “It’s got to be looked at. We don’t have the luxury of ruling any approach off the table.”

The concept of using technology to purposely cool the climate is called geoengineering and can be done in several different ways. One option, which has been suggested by a Nobel Prize-winning scientist, is the idea of shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun’s rays.

Another option is to create artificial ‘trees’ - giant towers that would suck carbon dioxide out of the air and store it. But, the side effects of geoengineering could be extremely serious – it could eat away a large chunk of the ozone layer above the poles and causing the Mediterranean and the Mideast to be much drier.

The White House hasn’t decided on any plans as yet and geoengineering is just one of many suggestions currently being discussed by experts, including a team from NASA and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Holdren has said that it would be far preferable to solve the problem by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases rather than by introducing geoengineering.

Opposers to the scheme will say that this all just hot air from a new administration desperate to cling to the ‘change’ buzzword.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 03, 2009 ) It may seem like an inauspicious time to be selling the most expensive home in the US, but that hasn’t put Candy Spelling, wife of the late TV producer Aaron Spelling, from putting her Holmby Hills mansion up for sale for an eye-watering £105 million…

The Spelling home, which is known as The Manor, is the largest property in Los Angeles County, at 56,500-square-foot, and is set in 4.6 acres of land. Built in 1991, just as Aaron’s biggest show, Beverley Hills 90210 was taking off; it counts the Playboy Mansion and the uber-exclusive Los Angeles Country Club amongst its neighbours.

Years ago, when Aaron was being interviewed about his home, he was unable to remember how many bathrooms the house had, saying between 16 and 26, which gives some indication as to the sheer size of the place. In total, the house is said to have 123 rooms.

It also boasts a bowling alley, wine cellar and tasting room, a China room, library, gym, humidity-controlled silver storage room, screening room, barber shop, beauty salon and gift-wrapping room.

If this isn’t enough to encourage you to make that offer, there are also numerous swimming pools, tennis courts and parking space for more than 100 cars.

The estate also has an 18th Century-style garden, a rooftop rose garden and a citrus orchard.

Obviously selling a home of this nature requires an estate agent with much experience, tenacity and a bulging contacts book, so Candy Spelling enlisted the help of a trusted advisor when it came to choosing which agent to use.

She let her dog choose. Madison the soft-coated Wheaten Terrier was present at every agent interview and Candy watched how the pet reacted to each. If Madison didn’t seem to like them, they were crossed off the list.

She (Candy, not Madison) now has plans to downsize to a £33 million, two-story condo in a residential tower in LA.

It’s a dog’s life.

What’s in a name? Well, in the case of Death Valley, California, an awful lot. There’s nothing quite like a sinister, mythical place name to lure in the tourists and in the case of this land of extremes, it’s worked a treat.

Much of the valley’s hotspots (sorry, couldn’t resist) have names suggestive of their location. For all those who, like me, are currently shivering their way through another British winter, the likes of Stovepipe wells, Furnace Creek and Last Chance Canyon have taken on a certain attraction.

So, first things first. How did Death Valley get such an awe inspiring name? Well it wasn’t for the heat - which regularly tops 50 degrees centigrade during the summer months - instead it was named by a group of pioneers who were lost in the valley in the winter of 1849-1850.

Even though only one of the group died, they all assumed that this valley would be their grave, so they gave the area its haunting name.

Death Valley is the lowest, driest and hottest valley in the United States. It is a record breaker-it holds the record for the highest reliably reported temperature in the Western hemisphere at 56.7 degrees centigrade at Furnace Creek in 1913.

Geographically, Death Valley lies southeast of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the Great Basin and the Mojave Desert and the valley is around 3,000 square miles in size.

Whilst Death Valley drops to almost 300 feet below sea level, the Mojave Desert to the south boasts mountain ranges rising to 5,000 feet. This desolate landscape is stunning in its harshness, with sand dunes, snow capped mountains, coloured rock formations, spring wildflowers and native wildlife.

It is a land of true extremes - whilst the roads are hot enough to fry an egg on in July; come December, the mercury drops below freezing and the surrounding mountains are sprinkled with snow.

Dying to see…

One of the most famous sights in Death Valley is Badwater, a salty spring which is said to be the lowest point in the western hemisphere. From here, there are excellent mountain views, including Telescope Peak, which soars to 3368 metres.

The 1.4 million acre Mojave National Preserve is the geological, ecological, cultural, historical, recreational and scenic heart of the Mojave Desert.

The Death Valley National Park was established as a national monument in 1933 and has long been prized for its unique wildlife and desert beauty.

Today, much of the park is wilderness and attracts hoards of visitors each year, who come to see the rugged canyons.

Rhyolite Ghost Town was the largest town in the Death Valley area during the mining boom of the early 1900's. Included among the ruins are a house built completely of bottles, a train depot, jail and old schoolhouse.

The Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is a wetland and alkaline desert providing habitat for more than 26 types of plants and animals unique to Death Valley.

Manzanar National Historic Site was one of ten camps at which Japanese-American citizens and Japanese aliens were interned during World War II.

Hidden in the green oasis of Grapevine Canyon in far northern Death Valley is Scotty’s Castle, which offers a glimpse into the life and times of the Roaring 20's and Depression 30's. Park Rangers in period clothing present 1939 living history tours of the Castle each day.

Don’t go to Death Valley unprepared - it didn’t get given that name for nothing. During the summer months, avoid cycling or walking unless at dawn or dusk, when the temperature is slightly cooler.

Drink at least two to four litres of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Make sure you fill your car up with petrol before entering Death Valley - getting caught short in this unforgiving environment could be a recipe for disaster.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 26, 2009 ) It’s no secret that hoards of Brits would love to escape the economic downturn and move to pastures new, but who knew it would be quite so many? New research has found that four out of every five people living in Britain are desperate to emigrate, with the majority hoping to sun it up in Florida…

Quitting the UK for sunnier climes is nothing new, but the sheer number of people looking to do so has sky-rocketed since the credit crunch first darkened our doors.

The survey, carried out by perfectholidayhome.co.uk, found that, if no obstacles existed, 79 per cent of Brits would choose to emigrate. As usual, the top reasons for leaving the UK would be to enjoy a better lifestyle and escape the British weather.

The survey did hold one surprise, revealing Florida to be the most popular emigration destination, as opposed to the traditional hotspots of Spain and Australia. Whilst 42 per cent chose Florida, 20 per cent chose Australia and New Zealand and Spain and France received just six per cent each.

Micro-hotels

However, if you are not in the market for making the life changing decision to emigrate, how about a holiday that’s perfect for these credit crunched times?

New York wouldn’t be the first place that springs to mind for a budget holiday, with accommodation in a central hotel costing an arm and a leg. But now, to fit in with the financial times, (not the newspaper, the climate) a New York hotel is offering rooms for less than £68 a night.

The Jane Hotel, close to Manhattan’s uber trendy meatpacking district, offers luxury sheets and high tech audio system including iPod dock, flat screen TV, DVD player and free wireless internet in each of its 150 tiny single rooms – which are just 50 square feet in size.

Guests store their luggage in storage spaces above and below the bed and each room has a small window so it doesn’t feel too cell-like.

Cheap rooms aren’t all that’s on offer at The Jane – the place is also swimming in history.

The cabin-like rooms have been in place since the building was completed in 1908, originally meant to house sailors.

Even more exciting is the thought that the building once sheltered the surviving crew of the Titanic who were held there until the American inquiry of the sinking was complete.

Today’s guests have to share bathrooms with others on their floor. If this is too much for you to cope with, there are 150 slightly higher priced rooms which include private bathrooms.

The hotel is opening in stages between now and the summer and is hoping to attract the budget conscious holidaymaker and business traveler looking to get a lot of bang for their buck.

Several national hotel chains are said to be interested in bringing the micro concept to life within their own hotels so this could be the start of a whole new way of small time living.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 06, 2009 ) USA - The United States has welcomed in a new President and now they are getting a new- look White House too – the Obamas have appointed Los Angeles based designer Michael Smith to redecorate the private quarters of the famous property, giving it a more family friendly feel…

Barack Obama has promised to bring change to America, and change is exactly what will be happening inside the White House as well as out.

First Lady Michelle Obama has selected interior designer Michael Smith to redesign and redecorate the private quarters of the White House, which are located in the East Wing of the most famous property in America.

Michelle is keen to create a family friendly feel within the house and bring in some ‘new perspectives from some of America's greatest artists and designers,’ said a statement.

Michael Smith is well known for incorporating antiques and historical features into rooms suitable for modern living, proving that antiques and contemporary living do not have to live in conflict and can in fact enhance each other.

He has already designed a handful of celebrity homes, including those belonging to supermodel Cindy Crawford, director Steven Spielberg and actors Dustin Hoffman and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Michelle Obama, who describes herself first and foremost as ‘Malia and Sasha’s mom,’ will be asking Michael to focus on decorating the bedrooms for her two daughters, aged seven and ten, first.

Michael said that he was “happy to help the Obamas bring their own energy and style” to the private quarters.

“The family’s casual style, their interest in bringing 20th Century American artists to the forefront and utilising affordable brands and products will serve as our guiding principles as we make the residence feel like their home,” he added.

Virtual makeover

The other White House to get a makeover was the official White House Web site, WhiteHouse.gov, which was relaunched to coincide with Barack Obama’s inauguration speech.

The updated and modernized design features rotating news stories at the top with a blog, a current agenda, and other information related to the White House.

<DataContent><![CDATA[(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 20, 2009 ) USA - The election of Barack Obama as the latest American President is hoped to spark an ‘Obama boom’ in the United States that will see increased numbers of people visiting the country and a far more positive environment for property investors and the housing market…

If ever a country was in need of a feel good factor it’s the United States and that is exactly what the appointment of Barack Obama looks set to do.

According to research from the Association of British Travel Agents, (ABTA) more and more visitors will begin to flock to the country, eager to see what the new President does to alter the American way.

People who had been put off travelling to the country due to their negative feelings about George Bush will also now be more inclined to visit.

ABTA Spokesperson Frances Tuke said, “With the election of the 44th President Barack Obama, for many reasons, people will feel a whole new optimism.

“Many will be keen to experience the new landscape that is being created following the outcome of the presidential elections,” Ms Tuke added.

ABTA’s research has also found that there has been a 21 per cent increase in the number of Brits aged between 18 and 34 that are considering visiting the country since Obama won the Presidential race.

But hold on a minute…

But, before all this Obama positivity kicks in, let’s take a look at the state of the USA property market right at this minute.

Property sales in the country are continuing to fall and desperate estate agents are calling for Obama to make revitalizing the American property market a top priority when he takes office later this month.

The latest data from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) shows that sales contracts on existing homes fell by four per cent in November and home prices and sales volumes have continued to decline.

Now, NAR economists have urged the new Presidents and his advisors to start thinking about a stimulus plan that would offer incentives to borrowers and unclog the mortgage pipeline.

Barack and his cronies have already announced some details of an economic stimulus plan, which would combine tax cuts with infrastructure job creation efforts.

Economists are saying that it could serve as an integral piece to the Government's remaining economic recovery puzzle.

They also believe that the Federal Reserve will maintain the interest rate at a range of zero to 0.25 per cent, which is a historic low for the country.

So, whilst consumer confidence and buying sentiment has been boosted by the new elect and by his proposals to revive the world’s largest economy, with unemployment soaring and company earnings plummeting, the Obama effect could well be short lived.
